Booked to stay here as a 3 star country hotel. Alarm bells rang when we pulled up in front of a building in need of lots of maintenance the dead hanging basket was not the kerb appeal I was looking for!

Check in was mixed nice building but awful decor plus very confusion on check in as, owner, I think clearly thought we were someone else.

Shown to room and first thoughts were can I go home! Very small all furniture a mis match and whilst clean at ground level don’t look up!

Went downstairs to find bar and restaurant. Found something looking like a bar same lady as on reception appeared and we were informed that there was no restaurant that evening due to staff illness. Asked for wine list there wasn’t one - only 3 bottles of red to choose from ie one of each!

Talked to other residents who informed us that there was no restaurant previous evening, again they were not informed on check in. They, however, did take a look at the restaurant, in the cellar, and in their opinion it hadn’t been used for a long time.

My advise is for this establishment to stop marketing themselves as an hotel and to invest in being a B&B.

I will never return as price paid was not budget but mid range and hat we got was only worth £50 a room not the £120 paid

It’s a shame to see such a fabulous building and location in such a degree of neglect

Sir I am sorry that as the hotel was full when you arrived and that you were confused about our room naming policy (unclear where you go the idea you had booked a superior room as we do not have such a classification on rooms) the photos and descriptions on site are for specific named rooms you selected as on your paperwork all the rooms are named and as you agreed was the same as the website, the door you opened to the room next door was a grade higher than yours which you could have booked on the Saturday you booked yours as it was available but was £30 more per night and as it was booked to a guest so as you requested we could not give you that room for the same price you paid, we always try to accomodate but it was already booked out.

I heard you discussing with all the other guests how terrible it was that we were not running a restaurant that night, again our appologies If staff are ill given our location in a small village it is not possible on a few hours notice to find alternative staff. However happy you enjoyed the meal at the nearby restaurant. And as it happens no other guests had intended to eat in that night.

As you could imagine the celler restaurant room is not heavily used in summer mainly for Families or people wanting a party instead the conservatory bar is used overlooking the garden.

It would have been nice to know if the cleaning of that room had been an issue someone would have immediatly rectified whatever was the problem, you do not say just that it was above! could have been added to the checklist for day staff to avoid any possible repeat.

And again sorry that you had personnaly had a dissapointing stay, and the family you referred to giving you advise on the restaurant had a wonderful stay celebrating his 50th birthday and this is the challenge of not being a multiple hotel with standard furniture and offering we are what we are a small family run hotel in the middle of the largest forrest in snowdonia with waterfalls in the garden, We are also currently in the middle of a drought which we have avoided effecting our guests but plants in the garden get the minium neccasary to survive and definitely no hoespipes at the moment but this You would expect!

We usually avoid hotels described as 'Country house" because they invariably involve us in the descent of someones dream into nightmare reality. And so it proved. However my wife wanted to spend a few days near Barmouth for the first time in 50 years and this seemed the place to get an undisturbed nights sleep. And indeed I did.
Approaching the house the appearance is scruffy and neglected; the kitchen bins are on prominent display, there are many pots and hanging baskets containing dead and dying plants and an ash tray overflowing with fag ends positioned next to the entry door. The exterior exhibits the signs of years of neglect. The interior is much better and has much character.
The room was large enough but the bathroom was high on pretension and low on performance. A impressive large jacuzzi serviced by water pressure inadequate to power the shower attachment or fill the bath in any meaningful timescale. It was supplemented by an electric!! Shower the height of which could not be adjusted, the soap tray broken and the water volume inadequate. Of the two lights in the mirror one was broken and the other would not switch off.
Breakfast was served for an hour and a half mid morning and was a set menu the same every day the only choice being eggs scrambled or poached with either smoked salmon or bacon.
There was no soap in the room on arrival and on one day the bathroom was not cleaned.
We did not eat in the restaurant. On the night we arrived it was closed.
We quite enjoyed our stay and the people were perfectly pleasant and helpful, but this is not the way to run a hotel.

First impressions were mixed. The telephone booking service in the winter was not very good in that there was no immediate email confirmation and that had to be chased up. On arriving at the hotel the grounds appeared uncared for. However there was a warm welcome from Gaynor who helped carry a bag up to our room which had been upgraded from Eden to Mawddrach. The room was specious with plenty of cupboards for storing out clothes and belongings. The bathroom included a new jacuzzi and shower unit. This was difficult to operate at first and the heating controls for the room were unreliable. Only 4TV channels and no radio reception.

The printed menu for dinner was quite limited but Gaynor did wonders in the kitchen catering for a special diet and included some extra specials. Breakfast was also limited. However all the food was well prepared.

All the staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The hotel provided a useful centre for exploring Snowdonia.

This wonderful B&B greets you first with a winding drive up to the main entrance. Alan greeted us very warmly and showed us to our room, nestled in the older section. We stayed here for three nights. Our host was also very helpful with tips and ideas as to what to do, where to eat. Unfortunately, we cannot comment on the evening dinner, as the restaurant was closed during our stay (due to illness). Breakfast was excellent and punctuated with some excellent conversations with Alan. In all, we enjoyed our stay here and would highly reccomend it.
Thank you Alan.
