“The castle experience”
Reviewed 19 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

If you like quirky this is the place, all but a pile of rubble with just 1 tower standing this place was built anew in a grand manner and with a lot of dedication by the owners. It's a fantastic place, a little unreal, big formal rooms mix with small domestic ones, dead ends and tight steep stone spiral staircases , it's fantastical, a little unreal, having been built almost from new it's been done in a way that would make you think it hadn't. Great big external 5 story walls of stone counterpoint with a minimum of electrical sockets giving it an air of a converted ancient building not a building that was built pretty much from new. The hot water and heating are similar, almost also authentically " castle like" . The heating is hot in some places, cold in others, the great room has and needs the great big fireplace with a big efficient log burner where you can get a great blaze going with logs supplied, the kitchen feels comfortably snug but has a table that all 11 of us could get around for breakfast and it's warm with its gas AGA cooker. The bedrooms rooms are comfy , (though the beds are very hard, and it took a nearly week before I could achieve a good nights sleep) the stairs are steep, numerous, curved and tight, with lots of different levels, doors at odd angles etc. It's a workout for the legs. It really is like living in a castle! Outside there are good spaces for playing games, mostly lawn, a nice little herb garden and box hedge knot garden I think they call it. There are sculptures, carvings, wooden figures, heads come out of the stair rails etc. Art is something that's obviously important to the owners. Having my self built a similar size but modernly equipped home, it's interesting to compare what was important to the builder in each.
We had a family retreat week here, it was great fun , it's a very interesting place to visit and it's well located for visiting the area, which has a lot to offer.
While At home I can enjoy at anytime the benefits of showers that don't go from boiling hot to cold several times a minute, and have plenty of sockets and good wifi. The experience here is not to be missed it's easy to appreciate, enjoyable and unique. If you get the opportunity to spend some time here make the most of it and enjoy the charms of the place.
