A wonderful location with welcoming hosts, The Old Shippon is an ideal base for exploring a wider field or just relaxing. Well equipped with a fantastic welcome pack which included toiletries, it is a gem of a cottage.

We spent a week here in March and, given the weather the previous week, we were delighted with our break. The sun shone every day making it possible to sit outside and enjoy the suntrap and views, listening to the birds singing and the stream babbling in the distance!

The cottage has an airy, spacious feel due to the double height ceilings in the sitting room and kitchen but the mezzanine is cosy with a very comfortable bed! Good shower pressure with plenty of hot water in the bathroom. Hairdryer provided. Be warned the water is soft, unlike ours, so a little shampoo goes a long way!

The twin bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor which means that the cottage is practical for a wide range of visitors. However, there are a few steps up to the kitchen diner, but these are wide and there is a handrail so should not present too much trouble for the majority.

If all you want to do is relax, unwind and listen to the birds or go for a stroll locally and not get in the car then this is a great spot. Matt and Laura will give you suggestions for local walks.

We had a home delivery from one of the supermarkets so no dashing off to buy food as soon as you get there or cramming it into the car. There is a fridge/freezer with three drawers so you can stock up!

However, if you want to explore further, Lydford Gorge is stunning. You can walk the entire Gorge in a couple of hours or there are a number of shorter walks that take in the highlights. We had a lovely meal in The Castle Inn at Lydford.

Cotehele is another tucked away gem well worth a visit. We went on Thursday when the Mill was working and enjoyed testing some melt in the mouth biscuits! A gorgeous Tudor house it has beautiful gardens and extensive grounds to wander in. There is a shuttle bus that runs between the house and Mill if walking is too much for older or younger legs!

Tavistock is the gateway to Dartmoor and has a Pannier Market most days. A lovely litle town to wander round with plenty of places to eat and large supermarkets if any topping up is needed.

The Old Shippon's proximity to Dartmoor as well as the ease with which you can get to the coast, Bude and Boscastle an hour or so away, make it an ideal location for exploring a wider field.

We had a glorious Spring break, Devon at it's best!

“Delightful early spring break”
Reviewed 17 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

Have just spent a relaxing week at the Old Shippon recharging our batteries after the damp, cold winter. Lovely, unique accommodation with a welcoming atmosphere, found everything we needed, excellent facilities & really good shower. The flowers, welcome foods & cider waiting on the kitchen table were a real treat. Loved the sitting room & log fire & especially the gallery bedroom & waking to the early sun drifting through the low window (there are curtains for those who want 'dark'), also the quiet reading corner. Very comfy beds, we all slept like logs. Lots of room for coats, wellies etc.
Beautiful unspoilt surroundings which you're free to roam in, explore or just find a sunny spot to sit & dream, read, paint, knit or just listen to the birds & stream! With no light pollution the night sky & stars are amazing especially when accompanied by the owls.
There are many varied activities & places to visit locally which Matt & Laura will tell you about & a farm shop nearby selling delicious local products, breads, cakes, meats, cheeses and much more. Dartmoor & Bodmin Moor are nearby, Tavistock with it's Pannier Market, Launceston with it's castle, an indoor climbing centre, Cotehele, Buckland Abbey just to mention a few.
Kelly Mill is ideal for all ages & I wish we could take advantage of their fantastic easter offer but other committments prevent it. Look forward to visiting again.

“Relax and unwind….”
Reviewed 6 March 2016 for a stay in February 2016

The Old Shippon was very well presented and very clean. The complimentary foodstuffs/coffee on arrival plus the soft fluffy towels and toiletries were quality touches typical of 5* accommodation - bath toys were an added bonus! :)

Being very spacious you can easily get everything comfortably organised and with a lovely open fire there is no loss of cosiness. Comfortable beds and easy access/parking all make things easier, especially when lugging in all of a child's paraphernalia.

There are a lot of well thought out helpful extras including maps, binoculars and a compass for spontaneous walkers. Easy connectivity to the Hi-Fi & very efficient Wi-Fi are an ample substitute for the television if needed.

As part of a developing vision at Kellymill.uk The Old Shippon will soon be nestled in restful well groomed gardens which will no doubt add even greater charm. We didn’t stride out very much bar a country walk which from the doorstep had us in open undisturbed countryside in minutes - very refreshing! Our little one loved the horses in the nearby fields.

The Old Shippon is a perfect place to do something or do nothing, a place to be entertained by your imagination and the natural beauty around you.

“Beautiful rural retreat”
Reviewed 29 February 2016 for a stay in February 2016

I was apprehensive about this holiday as it was our first time away with our four month old baby. The cottage however was fantastic and the owners were so welcoming- a roaring fire on arrival, saffron buns, cider, good coffee, quality bed linen, 'faith in nature' bath products and even bath toys for our little one. A travel cot was offered but we didn't require it. The kitchen was very well equipped and we enjoyed many home cooked meals with ingredients bought from a really good nearby farm shop. The cottage and its surrounding are beautiful and we really loved having some quality time as a family in this rural retreat. Lots to do nearby too - great location for exploring both the north coast and the moors.
