Booked as a surprise for my husband's birthday, and didn't disappoint. They kindly upgraded us to a Master room which overlooked the grounds and was both beautiful and spacious.
We enjoyed a 7 course tasting menu which was excellent.
We were very much looked after and nothing was too much trouble.
We are looking forward to returning with friends in the near future.

If you want to be pampered in a beautiful country house in remote countryside then this is the place.

We were give a voucher for the hotel as a Christmas present and decided to treat ourselves to dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel is in the Dartmoor National Park approached along country lanes and takes some finding. The last 1.5 miles is along a narrow, twisty single track road. A signs half way along assures you that you are heading in the right direction.

The mock Tudor style hotel stands in an elevated position looking over formal gardens and the babbling River Teign down a valley with Dartmoor hills as a backdrop.

The hotel has been carefully restored to retain its period charm and you feel relaxed as soon as you enter. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and we were given a guided tour before being taken to our room. We had been given a room on the first floor with views to the front of the hotel. The room was called Laughter and was very comfortably furnished and well equipped. In addition a pantry along the landing enabled guests to make tea and coffee and have biscuits.

Dinner was served in one of three dining rooms with views to the front of the hotel. We were served crab soup and canapés while we decided what to order. Following an amuse bouche I chose crab tarte as a starter and my wife had the lemon sole. We both had beef as the main course while I followed it with cheese and my wife had the orange curd, shortbread and rhubarb sorbet for pudding.

After a wonderful nights sleep we had breakfast again in one of the dining rooms. A cold buffet of cereals, fresh fruit and juices was provided with a wide selection of cooked dishes available to order.

Service was very efficient and the food excellent. It was a memorable stay in a lovely location with excellent food and very friendly and attentive staff. We will happily return.

Yesterday was our third visit to Gidleigh since new chef Chris Simpson arrived in January, and I freely admit that on our first 2 visits, we wondered if he was the man to step into the shoes of his multi-starred predecessors, the" 2 Michaels", Caines and Wignall. These are, after all, pretty big boots to fill! Our lunch yesterday has proved that he fits those boots superbly! This was the cooking of a supremely confident chef at the top of his game and one who has clearly put a lot of thought into his menus.
We enjoyed every course that was placed before us(6, if the count the pre-lunch "nibbles" served in the drawing room with a glass of champagne. )It was such a gorgeous day that a number of diners were taking their aperitifs on the terrace. From those delectable little bites of heaven, through the brilliant pre-starter of scallop ceviche(a sparklingly fresh start to the meal,) via a veal sweetbread starter(one of the best sweetbread dishes I have tasted) and a superb local Dartmoor lamb main course, and not one ,but two "puddings", it was sheer delight all the way! The front of houses staff, led by Alex, were as always superb, friendly, welcoming and efficient, making it all look seamless! Well done Chris Simpson! We are so impressed----we will be back soon! In fact, we have already booked an overnight stay in July, even though we live only 30 minutes drive away. It can't come round soon enough!
