We had a lovely week at The Anchorage. The cottage is lovely, nice and bright, in a good location for walks from the house. The bedroom with three single beds in is fantastic - a really good sized room and great for our kids to share. There is a brilliant recreation ground just up the road - the highlight of the trip for our 6-year-old was the zipwire! The adults enjoyed the walks to quiet coves and the beautiful estuary. Better/safer to drive to the estuary for the kids - not walking distance for them. Bigbury-on-Sea beach and Burgh Island were great for the family. The kitchen is lovely and well equipped for cooking family meals. Not sure why there are only 6 dining chairs in a house that sleeps 7! The second double bedroom is very nice but quite small - you can only access one side of the double bed as it is tucked into an alcove. This was not a problem for us. There really is no parking beside or even close to the house and this was a problem for us. The road beside the house is a narrow single track lane with no pavement or space for pedestrians (village roads!) and no parking - you can't even pull up to unload as you would be blocking the road. The house instructions say park in the pub car park or in a street right the other end of the village (and quite a long walk away). We pulled up in someone else's private parking area just past the house to unload all our luggage on the first day and then had to drive around to find somewhere to park - stressful. The only other negative is that the house has a bit of a damp problem downstairs. I wouldn't recommend this for a group with young children due to the parking and access problems. But it Is great for walking direct from the house.
We booked The Anchorage for a family get-together and it was perfect. Well equipped, beautifully decorated, comfortable and warm. Great walks to the nearby beaches, and a short drive to the (excellent) shops at Modbury. There's even a record deck & a collection that goes all the way from Carole King to ACDC. A really lovely house and the ideal place for an autumn break.
