When I travel with my family that often includes our college age child and older teen, the concierge/lounge level usually makes sense, if for breakfast, alone. We came to the Renaissance Pittsburgh for a one night stay, to see a game at PNC Park on 7/3, staying over, obviously, to 7/4, the Independence Day holiday. The third star on this review is for location.
The Marriott site details that the lounge is not open on weekends, but this was a midweek stay (Wed>Thu), so I went ahead and booked it. We arrived to 5pm happy hour to *locked* coolers of soda/beer/wine, no snacks, and a cooler for water with an apology note that it is not working, and to please see the front desk for water. :| At least there would be breakfast.
Upon waking first, I crept down the hall to the lounge at 7:10AM just for a cup of coffee. The "coffee bar," which consisted of canister "coffee" and hot water that you usually find in the lobby of a motel, had no coffee. The last drop (likely of yesterday's drip) sputtered into my cup. The best part? The TIP JAR next to the empty coffee canister. Another couple comiserated that "they only had one job," so I went down to the lobby in search of coffee while the gentleman called to see if an attendant might refill the canister.
The person at the front desk said, "We like to let our employees enjoy holidays." THIS IS THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY-- holidays and holiday weeks are when the hotel should be adequately staffed and all amenities should be humming like clockwork. Clearly, this Marriott manager is cutting hours and maximizing profits. [I'm sure police/fire/healthcare workers would prefer not to work nights. I imagine stadium employees would prefer if they were off to see the game. Maybe Santa also prefers to get a full night's sleep on Christmas Eve.] As my fellow traveler noted, YOU HAVE ONE JOB.
If you're a traveler paying with $$ or points, concierge is NOT worth it. Road warriors and platinum elite+ members, don't get your hopes up and pack some instant coffee!
