Emily B from Southington is right: "Curtis is the best"

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Jun 2024
Overall, the Doubletree downtown is solid operation: From what we've seen, it has been maintained in better shape than most mid-market U.S. hotels since the pandemic. The lobby and corridors are clean and bright, the pool and outdoor deck are kept up well, the gym is small but adequate.

Housekeeping is done daily without any special request; this is a luxury in the post-pandemic hotel world. Our room had a nice mini-fridge, modern furniture, well-maintained bathroom and generally fresh feel.

Two minor gripes: One elevator was out of service during our four-day stay, and the restaurant - despite having a lovely outdoor patio - was mediocre. A hamburger was ok, the flatbread was not.

But on the whole, this hotel is a good value and a pleasant stay. Perhaps the top feature was the staff: Everyone in Housekeeping and at the front desk was excellent, with Curtis as the absolute standout. He could be working at an Intercontinental; he has that kind of graciousness mixed with efficient professionalism.

Curtis at the front desk was the nicest and most hospitable (and funny) host. Not only did he remember our names but went above and beyond. As did the late night clerk that helped us change rooms when an issue was found. Close to lots of things and classic eateries. Some updates would make a difference.

Room tip: Rooms near elevators DON'T HEAR a thing!

Let's start with the good..
Pros:
- The hotel was central to what we wanted. It was a 15 mins car ride from the University of Pitt ( we came to tour the college). It was walkable to the main square and to the stadiums ( longer walk but def doable)
- Curtis and the wonderful blonde woman( sorry I didn't catch your name, she wore a red blazer on 4/20) at the front desk. They were there during the day and were really nice, and helped map out a walk for us. Curtis even went outside and showed us exactly what street to walk down. They were very hospitable
- The bartender Saturday night was also very nice and even helped me get some plates for dinner.
- Rooms were big and beds were comfy.

Cons:
- the hotel is run down. As a Hilton Gold member I received a credit for breakfast. I went to the one restaurant on property. Even though there is a menu in the elevator with breakfast, we were told we couldn't order from it and had to do the $22 breakfast. It was okay... small selection for a paid buffest. There was someone making omelets but they had to get him from the back, and he didn't seem too happy to do it. Staff was pleasant but not very warm.
- Out of the 4 elevators, 2 were working while we were there. During peak times, you had to wait a very long time for an elevator.
- the front desk guy that was there Friday and Saturday night seemed to not want to be there. When we checked in Friday he was going through the motions, no smile and I had to ask for a cookie.
-Then on Saturday we had a rodent problem in our room. We called down and the lady said to come down and we will change your room immediately. We came down and the same guy just went through the motions and gave me the new keys. I had to say.. " That's it??". He then apologized for the issue and offered compensation.

I would not return or recommend unless you need something quick and close to somewhere you need to be.

This hotel is in a sad state of repair, our room had torn carpets and furniture and a closet door of its runner. Bath was last remodeled during the Nixon administration. Only stay here as a last resort and even then you will be overcharged
Staff is friendly but nothing they can do to improve a stay here

Room tip: Avoid this place

Our trip started with finding out that our truck was not going to fit in their parking garage. We pulled around to the front of the hotel so I could run in and ask the desk for another option. He suggested a parking garage a couple blocks away and gave me a map to try and locate. Unfortunately we could also not fit in there. After driving around we checked out the parking lot across from the Paint arena (also just kiddy corner from the hotel) and were able to stay there for the two nights we needed and only cost eight dollars more then the hotel so we were happy. However a little disappointed that the front desk didn’t suggest there to begin with. After a flawless check in and receiving some delicious warm cookies we made our way to our room.

The room very dated and not clean. The box spring covers were not on the beds properly, the chair looked like it was picked from the garbage it was so worn. The wall paper was peeling and the facet in the tub was dripping. The carpet looked like it had never had the wall edges cleaned and the curtains looked like they have been around since smoking was allowed in rooms.

We eat at the restaurant for breakfast. The food was good and you got a fair amount for the price. Unfortunately there was only one girl working. So was seating people taking orders and bringing took to the tables. So unfortunately our food was room temperature when it finally arrived. You would think a day after a hockey game they would staff more appropriately. Even though she was working her but off she was still very pleasant.

So other than the location which is great for both the arena and walking around enjoying the city there is nothing good about this hotel and I will not stay there again.

Hotel was in a good location for a business visit. The room was spacious, though a bit dated, and I found the reception team very friendly. However, although the bed was very comfortable I had an awful night’s sleep due to the air conditioning unit sounding like a jumbo jet and the green light from the fire alarm directly above the bed flashing every 10 seconds.
