The driver/Tour Guide was very knowledgable and the tour was very interesting. The only criticisms, however minor, would be that the bus needed a dust out and he needed to have a microphone as it was a bit hard to hear on the rough dirt roads. Sit near the front and all will be good.

Our original travel plans did not include Lightning Ridge but on the recommendations of other travellers met along the way, we decided to visit the Black Opal capital and we’re so glad we did. One of the best things we did was to take a tour of the opal fields. Dave, our tour guide, took us on a fantastic tour of the town and the surrounding mining camps. He gave us a lot of information about ‘The Ridge” and its history with opals. Dave’s experience became more evident as the tour progressed and we learnt so much about mining opals at Lightning Ride. He is an excellent guide , with a great sense of humour. Dave told stories of people and places within Lightning Ridge and the 4-hour tour was exceptional. The tour took us to Fred Bodel’s old mining camp, past Amigo’s Castle and Chambers of The Black Hand, onto a now disused open cut mine and later to underground mine that we were able to enter. Our tour also took us to the largest opal agitator ever built in Australia but it was not operating at the time. We had a lovely Devonshire Tea at Platform 1, where we were given an opal explanation, learning about this beautiful gemstone, and we bought some opal products and other souvenirs. This was a really worthwhile tour and great value for money.

Interesting tour especially for hubby as lots of worn out machinery. Enjoyed learning about finding opals and what to look for. Interesting to see how they are rubbed cut and polished and the best scones i have ever tasted.

Picked up from our caravan park by our driver and tour guide, Mappo. Here’s a bloke who really knows his stuff. Great history mixed with a bit of good Aussie humour. Enjoyed the sites of town and the walk in mine with its underground theatre. Devonshire afternoon tea. Even a search for your own piece of opal is included. Plenty of great photo opportunities.
Highly recommend this tour and the lovely people who bring it to us.
