The bat & Ball has been my go-to pub for nearly 20 years and I've recommended it to dozens of other people for the consistently good guest list of ales, great food and friendly efficient service. We visited a couple of times last year and found them coping brilliantly with the Covid restrictions.
Last night was like being in a different pub though. They clearly have a new batch of staff, and badly need to invest some time in training and supporting them - simple things like where to find the menus for different dietary needs, how to put a food order through the till, how to run and close a tab and what condiments/cutlery etc go on a table should all be covered before they go anywhere near customers. And ALL staff - especially the more experienced ones - need reminding of the golden rules of customer service. Make like a swan, keep smiling, and if there's any chaos or mistakes keep it to the back room out of sight and earshot of your paying customers! Listening to loud conversations across the empty bar, customers being dissed for returning incorrect orders and the supervisor dressing down new untrained staff for making mistakes all contributed to a stressful dining experience and we left as soon as we'd finished our main meals.
Please sort your menus out too - I had to guess what was vegan from comparing the Vegetarian and Dairy free menus!
I really hope this was a glitch and not a sign of a lasting change in vibes because I really love this pub.
