Mum and Dad have been visiting Overwater Hall for decades, initially as a retreat from busy lives and post retirement because the absolutely love it! And it doesn't take a genius to understand why!

Located in the stunning surroundings of northern Lakeland, this beautiful Grade II listed Georgian mansion offers the warmest of welcomes (thanks
guys!!) But don't let the family run friendliness deceive, the service and food is of the highest class.

We didn't arrive until 7ish on Friday evening (why listen to sat nav, when Dad had been driving here since the 1980s!).....so after a quick freshen up in our spacious room, hit the lovely little bar to partake of local Skiddaw beer (for the blokes) and wonder at the one of the most spectacular menus ever seen.

Four courses of fantastic variety offering a taste of the glorious local produce. Each masterfully created, cooked and presented to perfection. Stunning!

We all indulged too much simply because we just couldn't get enough. It really doesn't get much better than this. And the quality carries through to the tremendous breakfasts, home made jams, bread, biscuits and cakes.

Treat yourself. It's more than worth it!

It would be easy for me to wax lyrical about how great this hotel is, but everyone does that so I will simply try and highlight what makes overwater that little bit different to your run of the mill hotel. It is the little extras on top of the everyday excellence that makes this hotel stand out:
The home made short bread in your room ( simply wonderful)
The filter coffee in your room rather than the usual instant
The genuine warm welcome and assistance with your bags when you arrive
The complimentary and rather lovely liqueur night cap in your room
The fantastic grounds and red squirrels that you can view from your room
Some fresh fruit available in your room
Oh and dare I start on just how fantastic the food is.... If there was a scale of 1-100 on just how good a chef Adrian is , he must be in the high 90s. Quite what he has to do to earn a Michelin star I am not sure, but the extraordinary consistency and quality of his food simply has to be experienced to be believed
The service in the restaurant is also fantastic: attentive without being intrusive
They even get your bed ready whilst you are enjoying your coffee downstairs
I could go on but I won't... If you want a modern contemporary minimalist hotel as you find in the city of london then you won't necessarily like overwater hall, but if you like a little bit of luxury from attentive hoteliers who go the extra mile as standard then this place should be right near the top of your list. If there is a better hotel in the lakes I want to know about it. We will be back without a shadow of doubt...

Room tip: Garden room and room 3 are excellent

Everyone should be aware if you book afternoon tea and one of the party can't attend you are still charged for their tea. Four OAP booked for a birthday tea and the person whose birthday it was was taken ill 1/2 an hour before leaving the house and couldn't go. We could hardly give her the bill for £20 so we had to bear the cost as it was suppose to be her birthday treat. We would have gone again with her when she was well but not now after this experience.

Room tip: Didn't stay here

Overwater, Owner at Overwater Hall, responded to this reviewResponded 8 October 2015

We urge our guests to immediately inform us if there is a change to a booking, particularly for Afternoon Teas, which are all homemade and prepared for the time of your arrival.
Even half an hour's notice can be useful in preventing wasted food and our staff's valuable time.

On this occasion the guest took home the unused cream cakes, pastries, scones and sandwiches for the fourth missing person of their party. We carefully wrapped and boxed these for them.
In view of this we deemed it appropriate to make the charge.
We regret that the guest has left us unhappy, we were unaware of this at the time and this was not our intention.

Have visited a number of times which in itself says something....but warmth of welcome, comfort of room, beautiful food, and lovely grounds will hopefully mean we will continue to stay here when in the Lake District. Oh and they accept our dogs.....

What sets this place apart is the attention to detail by the owners. Angela is on hand throughout your stay to ensure that all is well. How the 'chain' hotels must wish they had their own 'Angela'.
The location of the hotel is quite remote, but for many people that will be a plus. The food is of the very highest quality and the wine list is very reasonably priced. (A few pounds could be added to the Sancerre and the Pouilly Fumee and no-one would complain.)
Our bedroom (the Garden Room) was very comfortable and we hope to return.
