Maybe it was because I have spent a couple of weeks in hostels, sleeper trains and on hard beds, but I thought the bed in this hotel was particularly luxurious, with four big fluffy pillows (and a menu to select others if I wanted). The room itself was great, with a wee chaise longue to lay about on as well as a decent sized desk and good chair. It had a marbled entrance then regular carpet. The TV was flatscreen but the only English language was CCTV News. No problems with wifi, including through my VPN.
Check in and out was entirely without drama - I don't think the fellow had much English but he was kind and helpful. Be aware that a deposit will be required - I paid 200 Yuan. Breakfast was included but a bit lacklustre.
Apart from being just two blocks up from the train station and local bus station, the other great thing is that right next door is the Deer Sea Food Coffee Bar - don't be put off by the name or the boring outside: inside was very ornate, the menu is in English and the meal I had was really good - a delicately cumin flavoured beef with bok choy and capsicums on claypot rice.
If I'd had more to do in Xiangyang, I would have happily stayed much longer.More
