“Great place, but management problems”
Reviewed 4 September 2017 for a stay in July 2017

Villa Gioiella has much going for it. Great location in a very small Tuscan village without other tourists. Terrific views over the Chianti Valley, especially from the top floor. Lots of interesting art and objects in the house. Huge amount of space. Two kitchens. A little grocery store less than 100' away. A nice trampoline in the yard. Relatively easy access to many Tuscan and Umbrian sites (as long as you can cope with the narrow roads and the lack of signage). Casteliogne del Lago and Lake Trasimeno only 5 miles away.

Unfortunately our stay was marred by 2 factors. One was out of anyone's control. The daily high temperature was between 100 and 105 every day we were there. Given that there is no air conditioning, that was a problem, even though the thick walls did cool the house somewhat. With the heat the top floor was unusable most of the time. It is really designed as the primary living space and functions almost as a separate apartment.

The other problem was the management. There were a lot of things that needed attention. We were supposed to be 10 people. Fortunately we were only 6 because there were not towels for 10. What towels there were were either 2 meters long or barely bigger than washcloths. There were fans to help with the heat, but one mounted on the wall was broken and all had US-style plugs without adapters. The wall-mounted ones had a cord to short to reach the outlet.

There were other small issues, but the biggest problem was that the very first morning we ran out of gas for the stove on the ground floor. There wasn't even enough for one pot of espresso.

I immediately contacted the owner (who lives in Australia), who contacted the local manager. He promised to have someone come the next day to take care of the problem. No one ever came. I twice contacted the local manager and he made promises, but there was no action. It took from Sunday morning until Thursday night, just before we left, to get gas for the stove.

Owner Debbie was very responsive to our concerns and expressed a desire to change local management. With better management and less extreme weather I would have no hesitation recommending Villa Gioiella.

I also would recommend it for people who could use the top floor as their primary space. It is very nice with gorgeous views. I would advise a friend to ask about some of the issues we faced before renting.

“A tranquil Italian abode with an olive grove, outstanding views, comfort and happiness.”
Reviewed 17 February 2016 for a stay in July 2015

My daughter and I had especially wonderful trip at Villa Gioiella with our friends. I arrived stressed and exhausted. Very quickly my worries melted away as we sat on the balcony and watched the sunset. The black out blinds allowed me to sleep like a princess in the fresh cotton sheets until I awoke refreshed to the gentle sounds of life outside. The kitchens are fully equipped, the bathrooms fresh and bright. The Villa has been filled with the owner's belongings from all over the world. She has taken care to use local artisans whose skills are stunningly on display. There is everything you need at Villa Gioiella plus the magic of the place that is intangible and can only be experienced.

“Stunning location and a beautiful villa”
Reviewed 17 February 2016 for a stay in November 2015

I can't say enough about Gioiella it really is a gem of a place to stay. The interior is chic with far eastern influences and artefacts and has been tastefully decorated by the owner. The views from the balconies are the essence of Italy and what most people dream of seeing. The sun rise and sun sets can be seen in all their glory. If you dream of Italy then don't hesitate to stay here in the wondrous location. I cannot recommend this villa highly enough.

“Magical wedding destination”

My husband and I had gotten married in a civil ceremony in the US, but wanted a more romantic celebration. We had heard about Villa Gioella from other family members who stayed there last year. Debbie, the owner, connected us with a local guide who also served as our wedding celebration coordinator. With just a few skype chats and emails, the coordinator, Lucia, put together all the local vendors, including Chef Tonino, florist, photographer, classical musicians and a celebrant who officiated. They all worked hard to create an absolutely beautiful experience that surpassed our hopes at a very reasonable price. We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Villa Gioella and would recommend it for a couple or even a larger group. It is centrally located in a quiet town with many great day trips within an hours drive. This is a quaint, funky home with tons of character and charm. The owners are very nice, speak English fluently and will knock themselves out to ensure a good experience. Be sure and book Chef Tonino for a home cooking lesson/culinary feast. LOVED IT ALL!
