We stayed for 5 days at Within the Bays and despite the rain, our stay was very enjoyable because of Annemarie & Hans. Good conversation, excellent home brewed beer, wonderful view and extremely helpful - they were the perfect hosts. The dialup connection wasn't helpful, but it is good to be disconnected from time to time, so this still counts as a pro for me :-)

Thanks very much Marius! It's a pity we can't control the rain so we do our best to make everything else as pleasant as possible for our guests. Also a big thank you for introducing us to that intelligent and artful game of Dixit: no wonder it is an award winning card game.

We planned our holiday in New Zealand well in advance and did a very thorough research of all options available in Coromandel. We finally went for for the best view possible, comfortable 5 star accommodation, and an opportunity to get a glimpse of the local culture by interacting directly with local people. Within the Bays provided all these and more in a great value package that I think can hardly be matched by anyone else in the region.

Annemarie and Hans were so friendly and kind that made us forget about the rain that plagued 4 out of our five days in Coromandel. We got "nibbles", great music, excellent home-brewed beer, a great Christmas dinner, and always a really fine conversation no matter how deep or trivial the subject. We even ended up playing cards one night until 1am and had so much fun with the witful conversation the we really felt like spending our time with very close friends. Its interesting how Annemarie and Hans managed to pull this out with people who were their children's age and went on and bungy-jumped their brains out in the South Island the very next week! :)

Other things that we liked were: all spotless clean - better than new, great breakfasts (home made jam and freshly picked strawberries - my favourites), all possible maps and tourist brochures available, great hints for what to do everywhere (this is how we learned about a great Maori show in Rotorua), beach accessories (as in specialty spades for digging up the Hotwater Beach, beach towels and chairs)

Good to know: Bush-view room identical to the Bay-view room, but without view - it is good to decide in advance who stays where because the amazing Bay view does make a difference. I understand from Hans the place was designed so it can also accommodate people in wheelchairs (everything can be remote controlled, suitable bathroom access, etc.)

Thank you so much for your compliments Radu! It is good to read you had a great holiday in New Zealand! We like your bungi jumping photo on the left but are too chicken to try that ourselves :>) Let's hope your next holiday in New Zealand will be a sunny one!

We stayed at Within the Bays in mid-November, 2012. It is two or three kilometres from the main drag at Whitianga beach, perched in the wooded hills overlooking the sea, with a beautiful, harmonious view across the coast and harbour of this popular resort town. There is only one bedroom available, but once you have committed to that, you can also book a connected living room/second bedroom, great for those travelling with a family or friends. The comfortable, large bedroom has a private verandah and a wonderful and very restful view. Being part of a house and household is not what everyone would want, but Annemarie and Hans Apers (emigrants from the Netherlands) are unusually welcoming and talkative and are perfectly sincere in making the whole house, including a large living room/dining room, available to guests. I suspect that a deep enjoyment of conversation with a variety of interesting strangers is the main motivating force behind the building of this home incorporating a purpose-built B&B which was largely their own work. They clearly aim at the upper end of the market, and the room is not cheap. The whole place is wheelchair friendly, even including a short, timbered track into the forest behind, showing off the variety of local tree ferns. The roomy bathroom is well-designed for disabled people, but a number of their guests are honeymoon couples, who apparently do not at all object to this utilitarian adjunct to the main bedroom. Perhaps the possibility of sharing the shower is envisaged as a plus by the younger guests. Other unusual offerings are a toy hobbit's house in the garden, just the right size for a couple of six-year olds, and a small helipad. Hans is the main do-it-your-selfer who loves installing useful little items like electric curtain-closers. Annemarie is the craftswoman who may present you with an unusual gift, and the cook who prepares very enticing breakfasts including pretty well whatever you want, with home-made bread and jams. Hans makes an excellent beer, and was happy to escalate a discussion of New Zealand pinot noir into a wine-tasting. Both are articulate and well-informed. We were charmed by our brief stay, and happy, it turned out later, with the detailed advice they gave us about things to look out for on our way down to Wellington. It is, of course, a no-smoking house, but they kindly allowed me to puff a cigar on the deck.

Thank you so much for your detailed review! And yes, you are right, we do enjoy meeting strangers from all over the world and are more than happy to share experiences over a glass of wine with them.
Kindest regards, Annemarie and Hans

We stayed in Whitianga on New Years' Eve 2012, we had just arrived in New Zealand so we were still a little confused. Annemarie and Hans welcomed us in a warm, friendly familiar atmosphere, and gave us a lot of useful information on the country, which helped us a lot during our 4 weeks' stay. We stayed 2 nights, and Annemarie offered us always a pre-dinner drink with awesome appetizers. On New Years' Eve they waited for us to share a glass of champagne. It was really a lovely couple of days despite the bad weather. The place is very nice and has a stunning view over Whitianga Bay, the room is comfortable (no key on the door... this gives us italians a little shyness but well... we could stand it!) and has an ensuite bathroom and full facilities for disabled, a feature which should always be available.

What a lovely review! Thank you so much!
As for the fact that your room didn’t have a key: we have found a solution. The door has now been fitted with a privacy latch that doesn’t restrict the opening width. The room will therefore remain fully wheelchair accessible.

My fiancee and I stayed with Hans & Annmarie for 2 nights in March 2012. We came to Whitianga from Canada to get married and had chosen Within the Bays after a brief internet search. From the moment we drove up their driveway, Hans & Annmarie were great hosts. Here are some of the highlights:
---Hans greeted us in the driveway, before I had turned off our car's engine, and offered to carry our bags into the house
---Each evening, we were handed a rectangular, laminated menu, with an exhausting list of breakfast options, and asked to pick whatever we wanted
---The breakfasts were delicious, with the bakery items freshly baked
---Hans has impeccable taste in music and played selections from his collection during breakfast
---Annmarie gave my wife and me a homemade parting gift (I won't spoil the surprise here)
---We had two family members appear unexpectedly one morning for a visit and our hosts offered to make them breakfast, after they had already cleared away our own breakfast dishes.

I could go on and on...
All in all, the best B&B experience that we've ever had, and two of the sweetest people we've ever met.

Room Tip: The room was perfect for us, but be aware that you will be sharing the house with the hosts. People looking for the utmost privacy may not be happy with how close the room is to the rest of the house. It didn't bother us, but it may bother some. Just be aware.
