Looking for somewhere to get breakfast mid-morning on a relaxed tourist day in a wet Whitianga. Had seen a few of the cafes on Albert Street but kept walking and then happened upon the Tides Café on the corner near Lee Street. Looked good from the outside with a few locals on the outside seating. Went inside and ordered from the breakfast menu and a slightly non-standard breakfast request was handled with ease by the lady serving. We sat outside and our coffees arrived quickly; they tasted good. A short time after, maybe five minutes only, our breakfast arrived.
The eggs benedict was cooked to perfection and the bacon was very tasty and not overcooked. For me the highlight was the porridge, which was cooked to the traditional Scottish recipe (slightly salty). There was brown sugar available for those with a USA (overly sweet) palate but eaten as served with a little extra milk it was superb and set me up well for a day that just kept raining all day. For about $9 it was great value and breakfast for two with coffees was only about $40 total.
It is quite rare to find such tasty food and good value served quickly from lovely staff. Well done Tides Café, next time I come through Whitianga in the morning time I know where I will be going for breakfast.
