It’s amazing what they built, with the equipment they had. Fasanating story about Australia’s defences. Tour was very knowledgeable, Murriell, she had been doing it for 18 years and still had passion about the place. If your a history/war person, take a look.

Thank Murray G

We booked a train ride and tunnel tour. Hadn’t realised the Island had this in place until we saw the tour on offer. Just knew it was a prison for Aboriginal men.
The train journey is fun and you get to see parts of the island not visible from the trails. Once at the top you can appreciate how difficult it was to build the track and then the gun towers and equipment.
One point to note the trains run at 10:30, 12:30 and 14:30. The host on the Rottnest Express told us it was 11:30. Admittedly the train part is a separate business but we booked from their website.
The guides at the gun tower are volunteers and so do not always have an answer to technical questions. Our guide was asked why there were so many submarines in Fremantle in the war. Luckily we had an australia serving submariner on your who explained the need to cool the submarines’ mechanicals in cooler water as they were US or UK made and therefore needed to run cooler.
A great place to visit.

After pedalling to the top only to discover we the current tour was full and we would have to wait another hour, we came to the disappointing resolution that we’d be heading back.
However, thanks to the two tour guides on deck they managed to shuffle a few priorities around and get a second tour going! Essentially we had our own private tour of the tunnels.
Vivien was absolutely fantastic. Not only enabling us to partake on a tunnel tour but warm, friendly and passionate. The tour was grand and well worth the visit to Rottnest Island, but thanks to Vivien’s enthusiasm is set the experience off very nicely. Well done and an asset to the island.

A very interesting place to visit.
I walked there but you can get a train, it would "take the strain".
You could not be impressed by the sheer size of them, and their incredible range.
A fascinating piece of recent history on an island steeped in ancient history.

If there is only one thing you do on the island this has to be it. From the views to the amazing underground tour this is definitely a must do activity. We were lucky enough on the day to get a private tour and our guide was brilliant. (All guides are volunteers) The underground part of the tour was amazing, they have restored the tunnels and you are able to see exactly what it would have been like so many years ago. wow wow wow wow
