Looks magnificent

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Sept 2024
Modernised and refurbished chateau located adjacent to a vineyard and which certainly looks the part. The original building has been very impressively updated whilst maintaining the key original features. I suspect the majority of the accommodation is within two rather obvious new blocks to the front and the side of the main building.

So we were probably quite lucky to find ourselves in a pleasant upper junior suite at the side of the chateau itself. This is an interesting double-level room with a vineyard-facing terrace located down a flight of external stairs. Plenty of room there although the lounge deck chairs were not the most ergonomic, and sun loungers as per the website would have been preferable. Not overly private either as the side view was basically an entire block of accommodation.

Inside, and below the exposed rafters, the decor was peaceful and the large bed was very comfortable. Sleep was no problem; for a hotel with plenty of guests we were completely undisturbed. No shortage of storage space here, and ample minibar and hot beverage facilities. The L-shaped floor plan was rather unusual and the small lounge nook was quite cosy with a good vineyard view. The air-conditioning worked well and the automatic window blinds were effective. An interesting smattering of rococo fixtures, fittings and furniture added interest. Down some stairs for a separate w.c. which was across from a higher-level bathroom with separate shower, the latter of which was notable, again, for the splendid view across the vineyard. The hairdryer was rather a monster, and the badly stained floor tiles in both areas really did need replacing urgently. Looks like the whole suite had seen plenty of action as there were plenty of chips and scuffs all over. Slight irritation in that the front screen TV welcomed a Mr Rodrigo (very much not me) for our entire stay. In saying all that, we actually liked the room a lot. It had character, space and comfort.

Breakfast is located in the dullest of a pair dining rooms and was not very inspiring; all the usual basics and not a lot of variety. Egg dishes can be requested, which appears to be a big secret.

There is no manned bar on site so it's a question of finding a member of staff (not usually a problem) who will then deal with it remotely before returning. I must admit that I found it very odd not to have a physical bar in such a large hotel. However, the restaurant, which is situated in the best room in the building, is undeniably excellent and well worth a good blow out. Note that it frequently seems to be used for corporate functions so punters are relocated to the dull breakfast room in such instances.

We liked the ornate grounds and terraces which enhance the whole feel of the place, and there is plenty of car parking adjacently. St Emilion is about 5 minutes drive away; a pig for daytime parking but all free after 19.00 and plenty of room. There is a hotel shuttle bus but the timings and frequency really do need to be reviewed.

Finally, I have to commend the staff here. All very friendly, keen and eager to please. Mostly very young but clearly highly motivated.

It's a nice place, it ticks all the chateau boxes and it's convenient. It's also not remotely posh or elevated so would represent a good option for most potential visitors. And it does look magnificent!

We absolutely loved it here! The service on reception was exceptional (I wish I’d got the name of the guy who checked us in as he was so lovely and helpful). The spa was lovely, as was the pool, all super clean and well maintained with plentiful towels. We ate in the restaurant and it was a lovely experience. Our room, a duplex suite, was gorgeous. We only stayed one night and I was so disappointed to leave. Would definitely return!

Room tip: Lots of free parking, guests can stay after checkout and continue to use the facilities. Book in advance to eat at the restaurant

What a find! A lovely hotel in St Emilion. Ideal for touring the vineyards and a short drive from Bordeaux.

The hotel was created by a nobleman for his mistress and has been extensively and tastefully renovated.

There are 2 chateaux owned by the owners which serve Pomerol and St Emilion wines.

We took the hotel’s Triumph TR4 for a spin round the area and it was great fun.

Great food, fantastic service, stunning setting. Would thoroughly recommend and would love to go back.

Well done to all the team.

Very charming hotel. We stayed in a pleasant deluxe room (#225) overlooking the vinyards. Nice design throughout the hotel. Situated in a nice park in the wine district only about 5 min. from St. Emilion by car. Very nice outdoor pool area. Breakfast buffet fairly modest, but ok.

We were expecting a lovely service and wonderful hospitality but unfortunately the hotel management is rude at best. It’s daylight robbery staying here and I would suggest finding alternative accomodation in the surrounding area. Avoid and spend the money elsewhere

    Dear Monsieur Harrison,

We would like to thank you for taking the time to share with us your experience regarding your reservation process as you do not have stay in our hotel.

For your reservation you have decided to choose the non-refundable rate. In one hand, you have a more interesting rate but, in the other hand, you have terms and conditions to respect.

You decided to make this non-refundable reservation, meaning that you were able to come 100%. You were sure.

You have made the cancellation request which we refused and unfortunately you have hurtful words for the team who only respects the conditions of your booking.

We really hope you understand the situation and be assured that our guests are our priority even before their stay and we want to be very caring for each of them.

We truly hope that you will give us the opportunity to welcome you to the Château Hôtel Grand Barrail.

    Yours sincerely,

    Benjamin ROBIC - General Manager

We travelled as a group of 3 friends for 3 nights and had the best time here! Rooms were comfortable and clean, and the setting is beautiful.

All the staff we met were lovely, and the concierge gave us some great recommendations.

We hired the bikes for a day which we would all recommend, and ate at the restaurant (which was ok but we would probably just go out to Saint Emillion if we were ever to return).

Service was pretty slow at breakfast, and no service by the pool, but we’re on holiday so no rush (and it made us get off the sunbed every once in a while!)

Would recommend, and we will hopefully return!

Room tip: Hire the electric bikes, take the concierges recommendations!
