We were in Zanzibar for 3 nights and had chosen another venue with a rooftop restaurant and sunset views for dinner tonight. However, on checking on TripAdvisor this morning, frankly, the reviews were less than glowing, so we just went there for happy hour drinks. Good enough.
Conversely, Lou Lou Restaurant had uniformly positive reviews on TripAdvisor, so we decided we'd give it a look. Are we glad we did!
It's without doubt the pick of the restaurants we tried in Stone Town. It's not by the ocean, but is pretty easy to find on a fairly major thoroughfare. It's only 3 or so years old, so it is all fresh and clean, with a nice ambiance.
Marion (not the owner, but the managing director and swayed by the Belgian owner to manage the restaurant) came around to visit all tables and we had a nice chat. She was lovely; an asset to the enterprise. Our waitress was sweet too, with a ready laugh and a smile.
They don't take credit cards, but do take US$ as well as Tanzanian shillings. Still, the price was pretty reasonable compared to what we'd pay for a 3 course meal and a bottle of South African Chenin Blanc in Australia.
The food was delish, and included a gratuitous taster. We had seafood croquettes, crab pasta, and chocolate mousse and panna cotta. Sensational!
I would go back there without hesitation. The culinary highlight of Stone Town in Zanzibar!
