Had an excellent weekend getaway with friends at this beautiful little place tucked away in the countryside of the Bergville area just a short distance away from the tranquil Drakensberg area. Lovely spacious and clean rooms. Well appointed. Very good meals with Chef able to provide almost anything one would need. Breakfast was a delight. The bar is a lovely typical country side which seems to have been frequented by a very diverse tourist group from hikers, mountaineers, weekenders etc. Bar has momentos and little notes from people all over the world which adds to the ambience. Wine selection is top class for a place this far away from the buzz of city life. Want to get away for a relaxing weekend this is worth a try. Great value for money and the management team and chef are top people.

Room tip: Second floor rooms have a great view

We stayed here the evening before the Berg and Bush as preferred to a tent. We didn't get to sample the food but the rooms were comfortable and clean although the rest of the place looked pretty run down. Not sure if can recommend anything other than a stop over

Be careful, very careful. The fare you are quoted is not the fare you are charged. We have a written quote from their agent with a fare per room. When we check out they charge per person, at a higher rate. When challenged, the management argue and refuse to honour the quote from their agent. I will take legal action.
As for the hotel, bearing in mind it is a three star hotel, it is marginal. Food choice is limited. Portions just enough. Rooms are clean, the only positive. The recreational facilities are sub standard. The swimming pool is slime green. Nobody could swim in it.
The towels in the rooms are just hand towels. All rooms are for dual occupancy but you get given only one towel, and then a hand towel.
There is nobody to assist in taking your baggage from parking areas to your room and back. I saw senior citizens struggling with their baggage, but no assistance was offered.
At the rate quoted, not charged, it is reasonable, but at the rage per person rate, this place is NOT value for money. Rooms are clean. Only plus.
Just avoid this place and any other institution when the price you are quoted is not the price you are charged. If management challenge my comments. I will send you the quote and the invoice which prove the price you are quoted is NOT the price you pay.

Room tip: Nicest rooms are a long distance from the main facilities, so you have a long trek for every meal, and nobody to assist with you baggage.

Bryce M, Manager at Sandford Park Country Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 17 October 2017

Good day Sir,

Thank you kindly for your review of Sandford Park Country Hotel and the feedback provided.

We have investigated what had transpired at the hotel during your stay and have noted the following.

The original booking was done via Booking.com with two adult guests (separate rooms) and one child guest sharing, all-inclusive of Dinner, Bed and Breakfast. This was confirmed and the rooms were reserved. Further to taking this booking, we were informed by the guest making the original booking that an additional adult guest (yourself) would be joining and that we were to invoice accordingly. This was done in accordance with our hotel’s policy as we charge on a per person basis and not a room basis. This is also applicable to the Booking.com rates and expressed on their reservation form.

With regards to the condition of our swimming pool, the area of Bergville has recently been experiencing frequent lightning storms which always affect our swimming pool, changing its colour. Treatment for this is done but does take time to resolve. We are pleased to inform you that since then the pool is back to its pristine condition.

We do sincerely apologise for the inconvenience relating to the lack of linen available in your room and have committed in ensuring that this oversight is not to be repeated.

Thank you kindly.

Stayed here for two nights and used it as a base to hike into Royal Natal Park. Rooms are spacious, clean and bathrooms have both baths and showers...with lovely hot water. We had a room with beautiful views across to the mountains.
The food was delicious and there was a wide variety from the buffet table.
The cosy bar is very charming and if you can find a spot on the walls, write a message.
The staff are very attentive and friendly. There is not much to do at the hotel, but provides a nice base to explore the Northern Berg

Got a good deal so took my kiddies to Sandford for a little get away. The place is clean and delivers on what you an expect from a 3 star establishment. Enjoyed the atmosphere in the main section. Cute bar and lovely room where you can play games. Good for one visit. Would not go back purely because there are so many places to see in the Drakensburg.
