Basic accommodations / great owners

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Jul 2020
After an unpleasant booting by an AirBNB owner down the road over a very trivial matter, we were scrambling for 12 people to find a place to stay for the rest of the weekend. As we were just about to give up - we saw a 'Vacancy' sign on the Clark Beach Motel and figured why not. Owner Heather was very helpful, very friendly and was able to arrange 2 rooms plus a 2-bedroom townhome clustered together at the last minute.

The rooms and accommodations are very basic - so don't expect the Hilton, and you are paying for the convenience and location. We liked the screened-in porches in the back and the roominess of the apartment to coordinate our activities. But the location can't be beat - right in the middle of Old Forge's business district and right on the beach.

As such - sure, there's going to be some noise by other vacationers. Old Forge is the gateway to the central Adirondacks with a major water park and other destinations nearby.

The room is very dated, which I could deal with. However, there is no blow dryer (fortunately I travel with one), no alarm clock or clock at all (and the stand by the bed has no outlet so couldn't plug the phone in and use it as a clock), and worst yet no coffee maker. I just think for the price we paid, a small coffee pot and a clock would not be a stretch to their budget. The TV is a tiny table top one, which works, but again the cost of a decent sized one on the wall is not unthinkable. My biggest complaint is there is free coffee in the lobby, but they don't open until 8:00 am, and the morning we went they only had decaf and powdered creamer! Seriously? There is a supermarket not far down the street. And how expensive is liquid creamer. Combine these things with really uncomfortable beds and we were totally disappointed. the only thing going for this place is location.

Room tip: not worth the cost

Our first visit to this motel was likely our last visit. Primary issue was the noise we experienced from other tenants, and from the nearby beach. This is a dated motel and noise abatement standards were almost non-existent in the era when it was built. One plus was the high quality king mattress our room had. A surprisingly big minus was the continuing alcohol-influenced noise from the town beach just outside our window - people drunk and disorderly, with no police patrol. And this was after Labor Day, when one might expect the noise to be less.

Room tip: Ask for a room not facing the beach, because the beach is very noisy after dark.

If I could give No Stars it would be a better fit. Other than providing a roof over our heads our experience was bad from the minute we walked through the door. We had booked a room for 4 adults and 2 children and were told upon check-in that they would not allow that many people in a room. One child age not yet 2 sleeps in portable crib, child age 4 sleeps on portable cot. We were forced to get two rooms after being told we had the last room when we booked. Also upon booking, we were told there was a 2-night minimum. The second room added an additional $300+ to our stay. The second room was musty, the AC filter was clogged, the room temp reached 80 degrees in the middle of the night, we had noise from adjoining rooms--annoying. The staff at check-in and check-out were less than cordial. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this motel.

My boyfriend and I spent 3 nights in August at Clarks Beach Motel. Upon check in we were greeted warmly and promptly. All our questions were answered right away. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners, Garret and Heather, that first evening. They recommended different restaurants and activities as we were not familiar with the area. When entering our room, we noticed that it was clean, spacious enough for 2, and had a screened in patio at the back that overlooked the lake. Bathroom was basic but had enough towels and was also clean. One complaint we would have is that the wifi isn't very good. But we weren't there to be on our phones anyways. All in all, we had a great stay, it's a prime location and we will be returning asap!

I know this place to be an attractive property, with a great location. However, I don't know how this owner stays in business. She is the most unpleasant person I have ever dealt with in the travel industry. I made a reservation on March 30 for May 24, and requested a certain room, but was told that they don't assign specific rooms. I was told that there was a 14 day cancellation policy, without forfeiting the deposit. I called May 9 (15 days in advance) to say that I couldn't make it on the 24th, and was told that I would be charged the $128 I had paid as a deposit. When I said that was not what I was told, she hung up on me. I called back, and she said that it was a holiday weekend and there was no refund. When I called back the week of the holiday to say that my friend would be using the room that night, she screamed into the phone that I couldn't do that, that I had to be there because the reservation was in my name! She also said there was a two-night minimum, so whoever came would be charged for two nights. No one used the reservation, and she said to call her after the weekend and find out if the room had been rented. I called three times and left messages, she never called me back. Finally I reached her, and she said that specific room (?! remember they said I couldn't rent a specific room?!!) had not been rented, so there would be no refund. Do business with this place at your own risk!!
