“Wonderful Lunch as Usual ”

Carson's Woodside Tavern
Ranked #2 of 29 Restaurants in Malta
Price range: $18 - $48
Description: Carson's Woodside Tavern is serving up an irresistible assortment of American fare that truly reflects the diverse combination of cultural influences that make our country so awesome. You can go "all-American" with a classic burger or the perfect prime rib, or enjoy pasta dishes (inspired by our chef's family roots in Italy), Cajun flavors, spicy Mexican appetizers, house-made German bratwurst (knockwurst, sauerbraten and sauerkraut during Oktoberfest!), Irish corned beef and cabbage in March (don't forget the Guinness!), and French influences in our sauces and specials. And of course, we have house-made soups daily, a wide variety of side and entree salads, and vegan and gluten-free options. In other words, there's something for everyone at Carson's!

We brought out of town guests for lunch. Two of us ordered the half turkey sandwiches with side salads, one ordered the fish and chips and I ordered the grilled chicken club called the mother clicker. We also ordered an assortment of craft beers and hard ciders. Everything was wonderful although the grilled chicken breast was fairly thick making the club very tall. Our server as very pleasant and attentive. Carson's is a regular place for us. There is a great view of Saratoga Lake behind the restaurant. There is outside seating but for drinks only. We have never been disappointed.

I’ve eaten here before. Service slow on a busy Saturday. Food is average but goo menu selection. The drawback here is noise despite sound panels on the walls. It’s a big room and a uncontrolled screaming toddler having tantrums ruins a dinner. If possible sit by the window section that juts out but that area is close to kitchen traffic.

On the recommendation of our hotel front desk we ventured to Carson's not know anything else. We were so pleasantly surprised to learn the Tavern was on the southern edge of Lake Saratoga. The view from the outside bar was great and the accommodations complete with fire pit were very nice. the prices were reasonable and the service was great.

We have enjoyed Carson's since it reopened under that name...food is good, prices reasonable, but it is difficult to get into during the summer months when it is most desirable (sitting outside)...I subtracted one point for the number of trees they have cut down...MANY!!!!

We live nearby, so Carson's is a place that we will pop into when we want to go out, but can't decide among the many excellent restaurants in the area. And usually, we are pleased as reported in my earlier review from four years ago.

Not so last night.

Wife had a turkey sandwich and reported that it was very good. Took half home and had it for lunch today.

I had the fish and chips. Absolutely the worst fish and chips I have every had, anywhere. I don't know what the breading was made from (cornflakes, perhaps - it had that texture), and was overcooked to the point of being charred. The chips were no better - which is surprising since the fries I have had with other dishes have been pretty good. I will never order that dish at Carson's again - and if the management is wise, it will disappear from the menu.

We arrived around 4:30 and were seated inside by the window. After we arrived, additional guests were seated at the other two window tables. The initial waitress was pleasant, but for some reason, she took their orders before she took ours. And of course, the initial waitress left at the end of her shift at 5pm and was replaced by a total stranger with no personality at all.

Carson's is located on Route 9P - a narrow, winding road along the edge of Saratoga Lake. The speed limit is 35mph along most of the way, and is rigidly enforced because of both the cottages and pedestrian traffic, and because that road is a popular biking route. But the speed limit increases to 55mph at the end of the road nearest to route 9 - directly in front of Carson's where cars are attempting to get out of the crowded parking lot. This was not a wise move by the NYS Department of Transportation. I would think that the management of Carson's would complain to the State to have the point where the speed limit changes a bit further up the road to avoid the risk of accidents right at their front door.
