Unacceptable

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Dec 2019via mobile
My mother & I checked in this hotel on Christmas Eve on 12/24/19 of compliments of my sister who booked it for us to stay at. First off our room was absolutely unsafe and unhealthy due to part of a floor in front of the bathroom that is buckling which I tripped over twice nearly falling, and the bathroom tub would fill up with water while taking a shower, second the air conditioner & heating unit was so clogged with dust & mold that I severely coughed and couldn't get rest for two nights, I had to shut the unit down and cover it with towels to block the toxic particles, this was seriously unacceptable as I have been sick and have breathing problems as I reported this to 3 staff members and found out on the morning of check out that from your male front desk staff member that this hotel has had a incident with another hotel guest regarding air conditioning & heating unit being clogged with toxic residue. Also Breakfast was piss poorly managed as the food wasn't served hot and the chaffing dishes didn't have heating in them which the food lost its temperature which is not safe as hot foods need to be held at temperature. I was really disgusted by all this especially the heating & cooling unit which was the most important thing that should've been taken care of! This is absolutely unacceptable as I said! Management should make this right as it was a just horrendous experience during Christmas. I saw so many red flags and problems while staying here.

Sleep is comfy with 3 pillows per bed on our double room. Very quiet and location is good and near subway F. I have been to a number of Howard Johnson hotels but this one has eggs and sausages for breakfast! That's a big plus and thumbs up for me. Wifi is free and signal is ok. Free ice and water at the mezzanine where the microwave is located too. What I did not like are the molds on the shower wall and the sides of the sink which you can see on the reflection at the mirror. I guess they were not thoroughly cleaned. Other Howard Johnson hotels have their own ref and microwave per room but this location doesn't. It was a bit of a hassle to go to the mezzanine to heat something for the baby. And there no ref to store excess milk. But aside from those, we slept good and enjoyed the breakfast.

I was looking for nice and clean hotel to stay for an overnight trip to NYC. I wasn't thrilled with the lack of parking but it's New York...it goes with the territory. First thing we noticed was the "Happy Easter" light up sign on the front of the hotel. Our trip was after Thanksgiving 2019. Check in went well and we found close by street parking.

Heading to our room was a different story unfortunately. The directional signs upon leaving the elevator were wrong. It was a minor inconvenience but should be noted. Upon opening our room door, we were hit with a blast of cold air. We proceeded into the room to find out what was wrong. The light near the heater/air conditioner didn't work. We had to use our cell phone flashlights to see anything near the heating unit. We found out one of the windows behind the bed was open. In 30 degree weather.

We closed the window and cranked the heater up to 78*. Nothing. Still felt like cold air. So we headed back to the check in desk to ask for a different room. I was told to shut the window and the employee at the desk would be up in 5 minutes to look at the heater. She had to crank the heat up to 86* to even get any heat coming out of it. We had to wait well over an hour after getting to our room to even feel like we could take our coats off in our room.

We weren't looking for fancy or high class but only a place to crash for the night. But sadly we found much worse than that.

They charged me over $80 for parking for 3 days. The room was supposed to be a suite. It was so small that I couldn’t walk around the bed without hitting my head on the television. Also, the toilet paper was like sandpaper and so thin that it falls apart in your hand. The staff is not friendly, nor are they helpful. Not worth the money or time.

I try to be fair with reviews, as I realise it affects peoples jobs. The positives were that we got a clean room, well insulated from outside noise, and a comfortable bed. Coffee making facilities in room, and access to cold and hot water machine at mezanine level. Fairly consistent housekeeping. A reasonable breakfast is included in the price, and it is accessible to central NY via nearby subway. And it was cheaper than staying in Manhattan. However, there is no safe, either in room or at front desk, making it necessary to carry passport and all other belongings at all times. And it took a month for the 'deposit' pre-authorisations to be fully cleared from my credit card, requiring messages to the hotel, booking company and bank during that time. I would like to think this was a one-off, but it seems others have reported similar irregularities. Again, to be fair, my impression is that this was down to disorganisation and inexperienced staff, rather than a deliberate policy. However, for this reason, I would not stay again.

Flew in from JFK and arrived late. This property was chosen because of the location (near subway). Also, the price was much less than elsewhere.
It is a no-frills hotel, but small clean room and nice breakfast.
