Clean but problems

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Dec 2019
I was looking for nice and clean hotel to stay for an overnight trip to NYC. I wasn't thrilled with the lack of parking but it's New York...it goes with the territory. First thing we noticed was the "Happy Easter" light up sign on the front of the hotel. Our trip was after Thanksgiving 2019. Check in went well and we found close by street parking.

Heading to our room was a different story unfortunately. The directional signs upon leaving the elevator were wrong. It was a minor inconvenience but should be noted. Upon opening our room door, we were hit with a blast of cold air. We proceeded into the room to find out what was wrong. The light near the heater/air conditioner didn't work. We had to use our cell phone flashlights to see anything near the heating unit. We found out one of the windows behind the bed was open. In 30 degree weather.

We closed the window and cranked the heater up to 78*. Nothing. Still felt like cold air. So we headed back to the check in desk to ask for a different room. I was told to shut the window and the employee at the desk would be up in 5 minutes to look at the heater. She had to crank the heat up to 86* to even get any heat coming out of it. We had to wait well over an hour after getting to our room to even feel like we could take our coats off in our room.

We weren't looking for fancy or high class but only a place to crash for the night. But sadly we found much worse than that.

They charged me over $80 for parking for 3 days. The room was supposed to be a suite. It was so small that I couldn’t walk around the bed without hitting my head on the television. Also, the toilet paper was like sandpaper and so thin that it falls apart in your hand. The staff is not friendly, nor are they helpful. Not worth the money or time.

I try to be fair with reviews, as I realise it affects peoples jobs. The positives were that we got a clean room, well insulated from outside noise, and a comfortable bed. Coffee making facilities in room, and access to cold and hot water machine at mezanine level. Fairly consistent housekeeping. A reasonable breakfast is included in the price, and it is accessible to central NY via nearby subway. And it was cheaper than staying in Manhattan. However, there is no safe, either in room or at front desk, making it necessary to carry passport and all other belongings at all times. And it took a month for the 'deposit' pre-authorisations to be fully cleared from my credit card, requiring messages to the hotel, booking company and bank during that time. I would like to think this was a one-off, but it seems others have reported similar irregularities. Again, to be fair, my impression is that this was down to disorganisation and inexperienced staff, rather than a deliberate policy. However, for this reason, I would not stay again.

Flew in from JFK and arrived late. This property was chosen because of the location (near subway). Also, the price was much less than elsewhere.
It is a no-frills hotel, but small clean room and nice breakfast.

We checked in here last night and in the first hour the desk clerk had took an unauthorised payments from my credit card of $466!!! I went down and he said it was a mistake and he would refund it to my card which takes 8 days!! After another hour he took another payment of $466!! That wiped my card out and after yet another trip down he said he did that one by mistake too trying to refund the first one!!! I asked him how we were to spend 4 days in New York with no money???!!!He just shrugged!! We are from the uk and have saved all year for this trip and he has totally ruined it!! The room is like a small box, the breakfast is rubbish and all we have to look forward to is a other 4 nights here with no money to do anything!!!!🤬🤬🤬🤬

The Good: reasonably priced; friendly staff; clean and comfortable bed and pillows; decent sized rooms; towels and toiletries replaced daily; ice machine and vending machine available; free breakfast (inc. bread, bagels, waffles, sausages, scrambled and boiled eggs, cereal, tea, coffee and orange juice); local pizza and Chinese food deliveries available; 5 minute walk to the metro, only 2 stops to Midtown Manhattan.

The Bad: breakfast was limited, dining room was basic with food served on paper plates with plastic cutlery; decor in bedroom was tired; limited view of Manhattan Island; email and telephone requests for 3 bedrooms to be located near each other (under 18 year old travelling with us) were ignored with rooms being split over 6th, 9th and 10th floors. Building work being carried out across the street starting at 7.30am.

The Ugly: this hotel is situated in a very run down area. Our first walk from the metro to the hotel felt unsafe with groups of people hanging around, trash strewn streets and empty alcohol miniatures scattered around. Even though there were other tourists and hotels in this area and we didn’t actually encounter any problems, the area felt menacing.

Room tip: Better view on higher floors.
