The hotel is quite fine. My room was spacious and comfortable and the lobby area is kind of pleasant. The issue is with the location. Queens is a thriving borough. Long Island City and Astoria are great neighborhoods. The trouble with the Wingate is that it's right in between these two, in a residential area, next to one of the largest projects in the City of New York. The 21st Street-Queensbridge subway station is just two blocks away. There's a corner bodega across the street from the hotel that is open 24/7 but which during nighttime keeps its doors locked and sells whatever is needed (mostly beer) through a small window. Nothing else in the neighborhood, except graffity. On the first night I walked the ten minutes to and from the closest bar, The Huntress (a great place). The streets were deserted. The following nights I would take a taxi to Astoria for dinner. Like one taxi driver said, the neighborhood is not dangerous -- but better not to walk around after dark.
