Owner description: Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family home, studio, and estate, as an integrated environment embracing architecture, art, and landscape. Olana, a National Historic Landmark, is an icon of naturalistic landscape design, with five miles of carriage roads and a Persian-inspired house at its summit, embracing unrivaled panoramic views of the vast Hudson River Valley. Today, visitors can experience an array of activities, from meandering through the 250 acre artist designed landscape, to taking a tour of the house and surrounding landscape, to viewing the changing exhibitions both in the main house and a gallery devoted to contemporary photography. They can see a 17 minute award-winning video on the property and a permanent orientation exhibit. They can also participate in a variety of educational programs in the Wagon House Education Center, including a free backpack program that includes a variety of projects for children.

My fiancée and I hiked up to see this beautiful house and we thoroughly enjoyed the abundant foliage and the incredible views all around. We did not stick around to do a house tour but most spots were booked anyway so I would suggest buying tickets beforehand. There is a nice gift shop with great books and art.

a lovely old mansion built by Frederick Church who was one of the Hudson School of painters. Very whimsical in it's style offering a blend of Moorish and Oriental design influenced by Church's visits to North Africa and the Orient. Stunning views from the grounds.

Olana, Church's home is a living landscape painting. Rising well above the Hudson, he positioned and planted the trees, cleared the land to emphasize or frame the views of the river and surrounding countryside. Check the video by PBS station, WMHT for the complete story of this home and historic site.

The house was built by Frederick Church and family way back in early 1900's. His design for the house, how he built on to it his art work and some others, that show first of all, the views of the Hudson Valley from ATOP the mountain is great. TAKE PICTURES (no flash inside). The items inside the house are 90+ % ORIGINAL! This is a NY State Historic site. If it is a nice day do the riding tour of the 300 acres. Rainy stay with the house. Reserve ahead of time. The tours are limited and book up. Home tour about 75 min. If can, do the tour starting in May thru October. Then 2 floors open 7 days a week. Rest of year on 1st floor open and only on weekends.
