Owner description: Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family home, studio, and estate, as an integrated environment embracing architecture, art, and landscape. Olana, a National Historic Landmark, is an icon of naturalistic landscape design, with five miles of carriage roads and a Persian-inspired house at its summit, embracing unrivaled panoramic views of the vast Hudson River Valley. Today, visitors can experience an array of activities, from meandering through the 250 acre artist designed landscape, to taking a tour of the house and surrounding landscape, to viewing the changing exhibitions both in the main house and a gallery devoted to contemporary photography. They can see a 17 minute award-winning video on the property and a permanent orientation exhibit. They can also participate in a variety of educational programs in the Wagon House Education Center, including a free backpack program that includes a variety of projects for children.

Was with the family today. Spectacular view and history!! Unbelievable art in the form landscape. There is a great video that patrons should see prior to the tour and hiking the grounds. Absolutely delightful!

The house was built by Frederick Church and family way back in early 1900's. His design for the house, how he built on to it his art work and some others, that show first of all, the views of the Hudson Valley from ATOP the mountain is great. TAKE PICTURES (no flash inside). The items inside the house are 90+ % ORIGINAL! This is a NY State Historic site. If it is a nice day do the riding tour of the 300 acres. Rainy stay with the house. Reserve ahead of time. The tours are limited and book up. Home tour about 75 min. If can, do the tour starting in May thru October. Then 2 floors open 7 days a week. Rest of year on 1st floor open and only on weekends.

My wife and son and I went a few days ago to visit. Unfortunately I did not make a reservation to tour the interior of the house , wish that I had. We did however take the coach ride with our guide DAVID. He was wonderful and had interesting background information about the grounds and answered all our questions. If you are going hope you get David as a guide and do make reservations to see the interior of the house.

I took the "electric carriage" tour. There are many great picturesque views. The electric carriage was a GEM neighborhood electric vehicle that sits 6 (5 tourists plus the tour guide/driver). The ride is a little rough because this is a vehicle meant for smooth streats and not off-roading, but not too bad. The tour guide seemed knowledgeable, but a little stuck up. Complaining about the single radio antenna in the distaance ruining the view and noise from the bridge. Overall it is a great place to visit and take pictures.
