We stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Somerset several times in 2022 and it was generally a pleasant stay. Staff was helpful and made us feel welcome and the breakfast team was attentive during the service. However, we feel that our recent stay was sub par and below the standard of a Marriott-branded hotel.
During our 2 week stay, we experienced the following:
1. Frustrating card access to room - Re-entering the room was like a lottery since the card or the door sensors were erratic. It was common for us to swipe our cards for at least 5-10 minutes before calling the front desk. This happened throughout the entire stay and before long even the front desk were unable to gain access with the cards
2. Poor housekeeping and maintenance - Equipment in the room frequently stopped working or were not properly installed and sheets were dirty with stray hairs. For example, the light fixture in the bathroom of our first room was not covered, carpet and walls had food stains that were visible and smelled when the room was warm, and the air-conditioning for air circulation and heating in our first room did not work our entire 2 week stay
3. BED BUGS – My wife was bitten by bed bugs during the last week of our stay and we documented the blisters, swelling, and sores she received which required a doctor’s visit and medication when we returned home. The itchiness from the bites were terrible but what is even worse is that we had to rewash all our clothes and bugs still managed to get into our suitcases which we found when we got home so now we have to deal with bed bugs here for the first time. Combined with the anxiety, stress, and sleeping difficulties since coming home, this experience clearly is the most serious we encountered
4. Poor management and leadership – The General Manager was not helpful at all and left the other front desk team who had limited authority to handle our concerns. We had expected more interaction with the General Manager considering our experience and the potential public health issues around the bed bugs being found in the hotel rooms
We hope these are addressed so that they can be avoided in future stays.
