innkeeper made our stay worthwhile

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Oct 2022
The castle and grounds of this property need attention, and the plumbing and maintenance of the interior rooms need repair. Some of the ceiling, had paint and cracks from water damage in our room, but beside the ageing condition of the castle, innkeeper Kelly was excellent. Our room was spotless and clean at check in, and she serviced our room on request. We had a nice breakfast. It’s not a hot meal, but the innkeeper warmed the pastries and we could help ourselves to coffee and bagels. The innkeeper also brought us a space heater late at night because it was 37 degrees, and it was explained that the heat of the building was manually shut off by the caterers to save money, but we were able to stay warm in our room and have a good time.

Staying at the manor is a unique and wonderful experience…it has stained glass windows, ornate carved decoration, and sweeping staircases! I stayed in a Gatsby Room (actually a suite with a private bathroom ). My room was elegantly decorated, clean and comfortable. The surrounding gardens are very enjoyable, filled with flowers, statues and fountains. My stay included a free continental breakfast. While there is no restaurant on site, there are several nearby restaurants that deliver to the manor. If you like history, art, and gardens, you’ll love this place!

I always wanted to spend a night in a castle. When Groupon offered a spectacular price, we had to come. Booked the family Chateau rooms. This castle is located in the Ringwood State Park and situated right next to the NJ Botanical Gardens.

Parking lot A is closest to the front door. You may want to off load your luggage first, then park. It really wasn't that far of a walk though. If you arrive at night, use a flashlight. Check in was very easy. We were given rooms (301 & 306) on the 3rd floor. Two large rooms with a bathroom to share in the middle. Hot water worked fine. Rooms were large and comfortable. There was a Recreation Area right next to our rooms that included a foosball table. Wifi spotty.

Enjoyed morning coffee on the terrace that overlooks the fountain pond with fish. They offer a small continental breakfast. You must wander thru the castle and flower gardens to enjoy it all. Beautiful Shepherds Lake Recreational Area is nearby. Offers boating, hiking, playground and picnic areas.

Enjoyed dinner in nearby Sloatsburg, NY at Characters Restaurant

Room tip: no elevators so a lower floor may be good for some

My wife and I just enjoyed four days and three nights at the Castle at Skylands Manor. We stayed in Gatsby room 212, and it was beyond my expectation. Extraordinarily spacious and comfortable with old school charm and character Three closets, a sitting room and large spacious bathroom. You can expect some quirks as you might find in an historic home--for example, it takes 10-15 minutes to get hot water. We found this to be a funny part of our adventure in staying in a castle, but something you need to plan for. It's not a big deal at all, just know what to expect. The entire manor is extremely private and nestled on beautiful grounds with easy access to everything New York City has to offer (driving or by train from Suffern, NY--we did both--and it was equally easy to do both). When we arrived, we had no idea what we would be doing, but our innkeeper, Kelly, was extremely helpful. She made a suggestion that led us to a marvelous adventure including touring the nearby village of Warwick, NY, a trip to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, Coney Island, Chinatown, Little Italy, Times Square, and a final evening seeing "Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway. Thank you Kelly for your recommendations! We had an amazing adventure thanks to you! :) There are many other wonderful and gorgeous natural things to see that are low-key in the area including: the gorgeous grounds surrounding the castle, large and beautiful lakes for outdoor recreation, and beautiful views of the greater Hudson Valley nearby. I highly recommend this facility and would give it more than 5 stars if I could. :) Thanks again! We WILL be back.

Room tip: Ask for a themed room; you won't be disappointed. :)

WARNING! These people are fraudulent! They also delete their negative reviews on major wedding sites! They are the rudest most heartless, defensive narcissists I have ever met! They lied to my husband and I about all the promises they made, and the wife of the owner, Lisa called me just to yell at me! They are psychotic!
My husband and I got married here on 11/7/21. Firstly, we were told that signs would be put up to prevent tourists from interfering with our ceremony and reception. There were no signs! We had random tourists sitting in our ceremony chairs and in our photos!!! My guests had to tell them to leave! Random people were drinking the cider we paid for, and no staff was there to stop them! Lastly, two random women that were NOT my guests asked me what time my wedding started AS I WAS ABOUT TO WALK DOWN THE ISLE!!! I could not believe the lack of respect the staff has for the couples who pay for weddings here!
Second, we got ROBBED at our own wedding! I found out that the venue hires a third party for their wait staff, so they don’t know these “kids”. Someone from the staff went into the UNLOCKED groomsmen room and opened my husband’s and all his groomsmen duffle bags and ripped open envelopes! I asked the Maître d' why they did not lock the doors and they said it is not their “policy” to lock the bridal party doors. They were both left wide open the entire time with guests wondering around everywhere even when I had asked them to lock them! Unreal! I never heard of that “policy”!!! If you check on Yelp, there are multiple reviews regarding theft! And the owners rudely get defensive! Lisa, the mother of the Maître d' Michelle, called me the following day after I had texted Michelle if I can get the video footage to see who did it. She yelled at me and violently and told me that I was calling her daughter a thief! I never said that! All I had texted Michelle was that I would like to see the video footage because I felt it was her staff that did this! Unreal! Mind you, I still tipped the wait staff because I thought it would help me get the video footage! I wasn’t rude to anyone that day because being rude doesn’t get any situation resolved…
Another issue I had… since the door was unlocked in the bridesmaid room… someone went in there and ate all my cocktail hour food. I mentioned this to the Maître d' Michelle, and she didn’t even ask her staff to get my husband and I extra plates of food! When her mother Lisa called me the next day, I explained to her the situation, and she yelled at me saying “Michelle is not your servant!”. I was so confused because they are serving food… if something is wrong with the food, isn’t the wait staff responsible to fix the issue? I was not even rude to Michelle. I worked in food service before so I know how customers can be. I could not believe that I spent 60K on this wedding and they couldn’t even get me an extra plate of food!
Lastly, the staff messed up terribly on the seating chart and the table layout. I filled out the chart correctly which was provided to me and the lack of experience with this staff couldn’t even do that correct which caused a lot of confusion for my guests… I was so embarrassed.
A few weeks later, I met again with the owner’s wife Lisa. She allowed me to view the video which showed nothing because their cameras are conveniently only in certain areas of the mansion… I recorded the entire conversation and I kept catching Lisa in lies as she verbally abused me. She proceeded to tell me that I was being knit picky and making a big deal out of “nothing”. She would not even give me a partial refund either. These people are ruthless and heartless human beings. They pretend to be professional and caring to trick couples into booking with them. They are liars and snakes!
Please really do your research when looking at venues. A lot of these venues have their negative reviews deleted on major wedding sites. Make sure you check on non-wedding sites as well. I missed to see the terrible reviews on Trip Advisor and Yelp for this venue. I even later found that they have a claim on the Better Business Bureau that was ignored and never resolved.
I hope couples out there read my review before it gets deleted! Maybe I can save someone the headache and disappointment, so they don’t book with Frungillo Caterers!

I was staying there with my husband and 6months old son just a few weeks ago, and that was such a wonderful experience. The outside of the mansion itself takes the breath away. And then, when you walk inside, you just can’t believe that you’re about to spend your weekend in this terrific museum-like place. Seriously, you’ll walk around with your mouth open! Also, it was our first getaway with our little one and I was worried how everything will go, but people who work there ensured we had everything we needed. Special thanks to Rich, who went above and beyond helping us around. We stayed in Kings Alfred suite, which has a lot of windows in the bedroom. The weather was very cold one night and the heater didn’t make it better in the bedroom. Then Rich offered us a next door suite (which was also great by the way) and helped us move our staff.

Also important to mention that this place has beautiful botanical garden and a lake with boats rental. Unfortunately, February isn’t the time to enjoy it, but it’s good to keep it in mind if you plan to visit this place during warmer days. Lastly, a great addition to what I’ve already said is that they have a free breakfast.

I highly recommend this place and look forward to our next stay!
