Enjoyed our stop at Fort Atkinson as we followed the Lewis and Clark Trail. They have done an excellent job on the reconstruction of this fort, and we very much enjoyed walking around the big fort as well as the beautiful garden area with statues of Lewis and Clark, Native Americans, and Seaman the dog. Worth the stop.
The small museum houses some interesting artifacts. The size of the Fort is impressive. You can sit and imagine what life must have been. Unfortunately few of the buildings are open. That was disappointing. I suspect when they have living history demonstrations they are impressive. At other times it is a good short stop if it isn't out of your way.
Awesome place to step back into time and see how the early settlers lived in Nebraska. If you can, look for when they are doing the Living History show. Great group of volunteers put on a wonderful and informative show. They also do candlelight tours once in a while.
What a fantastic place to visit and learn about the history of Fort Atkinson. Make sure you stop by on a living history weekend and watch the reenactors. They do a great job in creating working 1820's military fort. They have the military soldiers, tin smith, black smith, broom maker, spinning and weavers, school teacher, sutler store and much more. This awesome place to stop and explore. Many historical buildings and a great visitor center. Stop by and learn about Lewis and Clark and the Fort and its History.
The fort is small but worth the short drive to go see. I would highly recommend going in reenactment weekends. Take a few dollars for items at the trading post. Reenactors are very knowledgeable and passionate about their craft
The best time to go are the Living History Weekends, the first weekend of the month May through October when they have reenact ours. It is great for kids and adults. But if you can't go then, go anyway for the museum. Very nice.
