This is the original Governor's Mansion. It used to be a private home. It was built in 1888. It became the original governors' mansion.

I like the pillars outside.

They have huge trees as well.

Inside the house is very attractive as well.

Worthwhile to see!

The original Governor's Mansion has a long history to it. It was built in 1888 by an affluent businessman who built it to impress the population of Helena. Then between 1913 and 1959, it served a the governor's mansion for 9 governors and their families. It is open for tours by the local historical society, but is closed on Sunday when we visited. The capitol is open though. We spent the time we would have used touring the mansion to ride around through the neighborhood admiring the really beautiful Victorian and Edwardian houses. Many of them were painted in very handsome color combinations. That made for a very pleasant morning.

This stately 3-story, red brick mansion was built in the Queen Anne style in 1889 by William Chessman as his private residence. Two other affluent families owned it until it was acquired by the state in 1913. From then on, it served as the home to 9 governors of Montana from 1913-1959.

Unfortunately, it was not open for tours on the day that our friends drove my spouse and me around Helena to see the sights. They did, however, tell us that it has 20 rooms and 7 fireplaces. Since we could only view the exterior, I found that its most striking feature was the graceful wraparound porch that invited one to visit. Perhaps next time...

This is the home of the first governor of Montana. It is open for tours a few times a day. Unfortunately I showed up at a time when I would have to wait a couple hours for the next tour. :(
