3 of us attended. We paid to do a double load (we sifted until we had twelve 5 gallon buckets of gravel) and then ran them through the machinery. It was a 97oF day, so we only sorted 1/2 the gravel, and took the rest home in 2 bags to look through later. In the half that we looked through at the mine itself, we found 2 that were over 5ct, including 1 beautiful specimen that could cut out at 2ct and 4 others over 2ct. In addition, we found a few garnets, fossils and agates.
I can't say enough about the support and staff. They are great people! Amazing and helpful. We got a tour of the commercial side that was very informative. After we sort the other bags, we will be sending the best back to them for cutting over the winter (when the mine is closed). Their cutting work is great and seems reasonably priced compared to some other options.
Not to throw stones at other places (so I won't name them) but several years ago, we got a giant bag of gravel from another place in Montana that had nothing like the 6 best stones we got here - and we got to experience more of the whole process, which was definitely worth it.
A great experience well worth the money. My seven-year old and I were there for almost six hours and we didn't even finish looking through all of our gravel. We took most of it with us to continue looking at home. Plan to spend a whole day and bring your sunscreen, hat, water, and non-perishable snacks. Gloves also recommended. I recommend an SUV or truck. I am glad I didn't get the sedan I originally reserved as a rental car. Don't forget cash for payment.
This is a true adventure - you will get dusty and dirty and the ride up there has some gravel roads. I saw some whining in the negative reviews about the drive, setting, etc. It's an actual outdoor mine, what would you be expecting? It's not a tourist trap with an office and gift shop. I felt like this was an authentic experience and the owners/operators were nice and instructive. I felt like this was an authentic experience and the owners/operators were nice and instructive.

My son has always wanted to do this sort of thing And at last we had the opportunity.
We rang up And Booked ourselves in.
The scenery was stunning and beautiful.
We were greeted by Matt, Eric and Bruce the owner.
They showed us what to do and explained everything well
They were all Very friendly, helpful And full of enthusiasm.
We Found sapphires but just being there was brilliant.
Thank you so much for making a dream come true and we hope to return asap.
It was our first time ever doing something like this and we had a blast! The guys here are so helpful and really love what they do. We learned so much and found several sapphires, a couple garnets and agate and quartz.
We would definitely come back and recommend everyone to do it!
I am so glad we saw this as attraction to do during our stay in Helena.
My husband and I filled 6 buckets of rocks directly from the minefield. We enjoyed every stage of the process as the rocks made their way to the sorter. That's when the real fun began. With Eric's expert guidance, in just a few minutes, we learned what to look for, inding lovely sapphires and garnets.
Things to think about...bring water and a decent snack. You could easily enjoy the entire day finding treasure.
What a great date!
