Coming from flat southern New Jersey to Mount Helena for our first Montana hike, we certainly encountered plenty of vertical. Thoroughly enjoyed the sights at the top as well as the scenery along the way and back, and we did get plenty of exercise!

We visited the Mount Helena City Park on a recent visit to Helena, Montana. The park is on a hillside on the outskirts of the city. It offers many miles of hiking trails, and it features some impressive views of the city and surrounding area. The park is also home to the gigantic stone "H" on the hillside that you can see from all over the city.

There are actually many trails available throughout the park. We hiked out to the big H, which was about a mile from the parking lot. We could have spent many hours walking all around the park, but even the short hike we did afforded us excellent views.

The hike itself was not particularly strenuous with a smooth and well-maintained trail. However, being a high elevation and with the steep hillside, we found ourselves running out of breath quickly. Still, anyone with even a moderate physical ability should be able to hike these trails without issue.

Overall, I recommend visiting the Mount Helena Park as it provides great views and nice hiking opportunities.

Beautiful view on top of the mountain next to the parking lot! There is a bench to sit on top too. Could use better signage but a great small hike up top.

This is a city park located inside the city limits of Helena. You reach it by passing through a residential neighborhood. From here you have great views of the city and surrounding area.

Parking is limited. The day we visited most of the spots were taken by hikers and dog walkers.

Two buildings to note are the Cathedral of St. Helena, and the State Capital.
