Apple cottage was dead easy to find, in the little village of Tatworth just south of Chard.
As soon as we stepped through the door we felt right at home. There were wood panelled floors throughout, and a lovely open-plan kitchen/living room.
The whole place was very clean and neatly organised. It was perfect for just the two of us. There's a wonderful pub literally 2-3 minutes' walk away, with really friendly staff, harmless and entertaining locals, and a thoroughly cosy atmosphere to it - bare brick walls, plush, leather sofas, an open fire, and great ales and wines.
The cottage is also home to a couple of chattering goats whose conversation you can hear, peacefully in the background, from the living room, which makes for a pleasing soundtrack when the television isn't on.
The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed to cook up some locally sourced sausages for breakfast. The only things we felt we needed were loo rolls and matches (there were plenty of candles sitting out, but nothing to light them with, which was a shame).
I would absolutely recommend visiting this charming little cottage. The owner knocked on the door not long after we'd arrived to make sure we were okay, which I appreciated.
Thank you Mr and Mrs Tothill for looking after my wife and I for a lovely weekend. We miss it already.
Apple Cottage is great for a couple, the bedroom is light and airy and the open plan downstairs kitchen/ living area is lovely. The cottage is ideally situated to explore the local area with historic houses within easy reach and also Lyme Regis about 20 mins drive away. Carmen, who owns the cottage, is great and nothing to much trouble.
After browsing the internet for suitable accommodation for just the 2 of us, I eventually found Apple Cottage on the "Classic Cottages" site.
We wanted a warm, cosy cottage to spend Christmas, self-catering so that we could "come & go" as we pleased. It was very well positioned in its proximity to Chard, Axminster & Lyme Regis (along with various other coastal villages, including Beer). A short walk up the road was a nice little pub, "Ye Olde Poppe Inn", where we had pre-Christmas Sunday lunch.
The owners Carmel & Simon, were friendly & helpful.
We were a little disappointed on arrival to find there was no heating in the lounge (although it was advertised as having FULL gas central heating); there was a little space-heater which took ages to warm-up the room. Also, although not mentioned in the description, there was no Wi-Fi, bit of a problem as we would have liked to get in touch with family on Christmas Day. We were surprised to find there were no instructions for the cottage (eg. how to use the heating, boiler, etc) I also thought it might be nice to have a "welcome" pack (eg. fresh bread, milk, eggs) as we found in another recent cottage rental. Thankfully, we had brought with us all we needed in the way of supplies for the week, and soon found a little shop for anything else we needed.
The cleanliness of the cottage wasn't as good as we'd expected, the overall look was ok, the bedding was clean & fresh, as was the overall decor, but having had to move a little cabinet in the lounge area for the little Christmas tree I'd brought with us, I found several dead wood-lice underneath! There was mould along a shelf above the bath, and along the shower-screen in the bathroom (it doesn't take much to remove/replace this!) Dust & a few cobwebs around the place too, but the biggest gripe was the cooker. The oven racks were greasy, as was the small baking tray, (which also had baked-on food left on it), which again, doesn't take a lot to replace. We thought the odds & ends in the way of crockery a little strange, too, & the fact there was only 2 dinner knives!! The addition of a wardrobe, (only a hat-stand to hang clothes on), waste-bin & hairdryer in the bedroom would also have been a plus, as would toilet cleaner & a sponge for cleaning round the bath/sink; all "little things" but would have made a "big difference"!!
All-in-all, it was a pleasant cottage in a good location, easy to get to places of interest, especially Lyme Regis for a walk on the beach.
We thought it probably more suitable for a weekend break than for a whole week.
Nice to visit the neighbours, who enjoyed eating our food-scraps!! - four little piggies down the garden.
