I think when people go to beaches in this part of Maine, they think of all of the tourist traps, like Old Orchard Beach (more like a carnival than a beach) or the ones farther south. But if you're looking for a quiet getaway, try Ferry Beach instead.
It's in a state park, so you know it's well-maintained. It's got decent bathrooms, and hiking trails through the park part, and the beach ... oh, the beach. Just beautiful. And the crowd seemed quiet -- having a good time, sure, but noisy tourists like some places (I'm looking at you again, Old Orchard Beach). I'd bet a lot of them were locals.
Ferry Beach isn't fancy or surrounded by other attractions and stores and restaurants. It's sort of out of the way, really, though not at all hard to find. But it's just perfect for what I was looking for -- a beautiful, quiet spot on the ocean to relax and unwind.
