The view from Little White Caps is lovely, over the bay with a sunrise in the morning and lobster boats checking their traps. It was warm enough to keep the windows open at night and we heard the water lap the rocks. The Port Clyde Lighthouse was just up the road and we watched the sunset from there one evening. The accommodations were very clean and comfortable. We couldn't have been more pleased with our week long stay!
The location is wonderful. Easy stroll into town or to the lighthouse. The view from the deck, bedroom and living area is gorgeous. There is a nice backyard area. Port Clyde is a gem! These aspects would give this rental a 10 star rating! The reason I can only give it a 3 star rating is: It could have been cleaner. This may be because it was suffering from the mid-summer rental blues (i.e. not enough time to properly clean between rentals) or the previous renters this summer were very messy. I don't want to be overly critical, as it was generally clean, but it really needed a thorough cleaning.
One example, after arriving we tried to cook something on the stove and every burner we turned on smoked like crazy, because the burners were filthy and the catch-pans were caked with crud. It also appeared as if someone had made a chocolate cake previously, as there were cake drippings all down the oven. We decided to eat sandwiches that first night! I spent a solid 2 hours the next morning thoroughly cleaning the range, the range-hood, the toaster, the dishes we would use for the week and a few select spots in the cupboards so we could settle in.
Additionally, the furniture coverings were a bit tired, the shower can only be used at 50% flow-rate (otherwise it doesn't drain properly), the shower curtain needed replacing (mold/mildew at base, probably because of the previous issue), and while the brand new towels were appreciated, they would have been more so if they had been washed first before putting out! After showering the first morning we were covered in fuzz after toweling off...we went to the laundromat and washed all the towels!
A couple suggestions that would make this a 10 star: clear out the clutter to make it easier to clean, give it a thorough top-to-bottom cleaning, update or put covers on the furniture, fix shower drain issues, replace carpeting in kitchen and entry area with vinyl or linoleum, repair the ripped screens.
And to the people renting these summer rentals, if you make a big mess please clean up after yourself. 4-6 hours is not a lot of time to clean a place, so you're really leaving a mess for the next renters. My motto: always try to leave a place better than you found it!
Again, I don't want to be overly critical and I was actually hoping the owner/rental company would contact me privately to see how we liked it, but they didn't. We loved, loved, loved Port Clyde and this rental location. We hope with this honest feedback they will make these improvements, as we would gladly come back if they did!
