What a great afternoon we had here! Therese dug a pit in the sand and it filled immediately with hot water from below. We lounged around for an hour in our own hot mud / sand bath. It was like the United Nations of mud bathers, with people from all over the world. Hot Water Beach is a beach on Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, approximately 12 kilometres south east of Whitianga, and approximately 175 kilometres from Auckland by car. Its name comes from underground hot springs which filter up through the sand between the high and low water tidal reaches. It is one of the most popular geothermal attractions in the Waikato Region. Thanks to Marg Gmoser for recommending this! Good advice ! We loved it !!

Nice place to visit. Beautiful beach. Parking close by. You pay for parking but if you park across the street you don't. Take a spade.

What an experience. This is a once in a lifetime thing, a bucket list item. So you rent a shovel and dig a hole in the sand, preferably bath size. It then fills up with water from underwater hot springs. Be careful the water can be too hot to sit it. Essentially create your own hot water spa on the beach. And when you get too hot go for a swim in the Ocean.

You need to get to the beach within 2 hours of low tide to be able to make the most of the hot water coming up through the sand. A lot of people were gathering to dig holes to lie in - the water coming through was 65deg C though, so you need to make sure you dig somewhere that you can mix cold water in or it's scalding!
The beach isn't suitable for swimming due to the rip currents, but is picturesque and an interesting experience.
If you forget a spade, there are plenty of places hiring them.

Really neat way to start the day. Best times are within two hours of high tide. You also need to make sure where you are digging has a good mix of hot and cold as the hot water is very hot. Nice and relaxing after you've dug your hole.
