We enjoyed the brief tour that was included with admission and getting to see a race down by the track. My kids liked the jockey clothes and horse race simulation. I appreciated the booths where we could watch past Kentucky Derbys and the movie about the history.

Easy to find with plenty of free parking. Included in your admission is a general tour of Churchill Downs which takes you out to the seating area, past plaques up high of past winners and a great photo opp of the 2 squires. We paid for the Barn and Backside tour as well where by van they drive you to the stable area on the other side of the track. You will see all the workers, horses perhaps being washed, how small jockey boots are and more. Docents in both tours are very informative. Try to go early on either tours to see the horses being exercised on the track. After the tours, go into the museum into the center where you will stand for a the surround screen theater show which is amazing. Get there a few minutes before it starts as the guard does a little speech before the movie and he is funny with good info too. After that, we spent a few hours on the first and second floors of the museum. Lots of info on race horsing and history of the Derby, plus jockeys and those who influenced the game. There are interactive things to do like competing by answering questions where correct answers help you advance around a track, or try broadcasting a race. You will learn about the Oaks, see past trophies and learn about how thoroughbreds are trained at such early ages. Take time to see how horse shoes are changed and get your photo on top of the horse at the starting gate on the upper floor. One of my fave displays was of the Derby hats. The gift shop has a great selection of all things Derby, horse or KY related. Enjoy!

We came with our school group who was in town for the National Archery competition. We have a great tour guide and we all learned so much about the racetrack and the Kentucky Derby! Would definitely check it out again on another trip for the rest of our family.

This museum and tour of Churchill Downs are well worth your time. The 18 minute film in the museum’s high-tech, surround-screen theater is amazing. We had lunch in the museum’s cafe and highly recommend their Kentucky Hot Brown signature dish. And of course, we had to have a mint julep! Outstanding facilities!
