Yo Hak is a very nice, remote spot located about 8 miles from the Dangriga. You really have the sense that you are off the grid. The fact that there are only 5 spacious cabins helps make you feel even more isolated and really helps you to relax. If you are looking for not much to do and just lay around this is the place. The food is very good and the barman makes nice drinks trying to please most palettes. The downside is that they are extremely regimented in the start time of meals. One day, lunch was served late and I had asked for a later start time to dinner which they would not accommodate. Despite making good food, they somehow had to be told several times that my girlfriend is a vegetarian and served her meat several times. This wasn’t a big deal but after asking several times, the manager made us feel like we were giving them a hard time. Although they have lots of activities, they are all way overpriced compared to what you find on the mainland. It seems like they really try to take advantage of that fact that you are “captive” on a remote island. We aren’t shy about asking for things which for some reason was taken as dissatisfaction. On our second to last day, the manager, Philippe, called us aside and asked us if we wanted to leave the island. To us it seemed like he wanted to us to leave. We were really taken aback but decided to stay and not let it ruin our trip.

We stayed on the island for 6 days/5 nights. This island is a quaint family owned island that is off the grid, completely; not just TV, but water and electricity. I think it's really great to know this ahead of time, so that you know you are in for, what could be, an adventure. The showers do not have consistent hot water and the electricity may flash in and out, but it is a resort that is off the grid, so it is totally to be expected and in no way a draw back if you come in knowing that.

This island is a great example of eco-tourism. Awesome excursions all over the country and kayaking and snorkeling at your back door! I think it is doing the island an injustice to call it luxury by any means. It is not a luxury resort, it is a family owned resort that is relatively new with a really wonderful staff that lives on the island. I would say it is similar to doing a lake house rental instead of being at a resort.

Our drawback was food. I think we came between grocery orders. There was little to no fresh vegetables or fruit. We ate VERY heavy meals. Very meat and cheese heavy. The snacks are pre-made pastries that seem to come from a costco like store. Also, ice and juice is hard to come by. They don't always have juice made, and it takes effort for them to make the ice, as they have to shave it off a block them-self.

The great part of this island is that they come by their challenges very honestly. When we checked out, they told us how they have been working on internet range, water temperature, and electricity. Don't expect this island to be something it isn't. If you do, you will miss how wonderfully quaint and adventurous it really is!

Room tip: Chaac is hands down the best cabin.

My husband and I had an amazing week at Yok Ha. I had my eye on Yok Ha after stumbling upon it on an internet search a few years ago. I was so excited when I saw the deal on Groupon and booked the trip. My husband and I have traveled quite a bit and are used to adapting to different locations to get the most out of our travels. I will say leading up to the trip there were a couple of reviews that made me nervous and we even considered making other arrangements but decided to continue as planned. Everything was great about our stay- the accommodations were comfortable and clean, the food was phenomenal (and we are used to eating very well), the staff was so hospitable, the island so so so relaxing, and the scuba diving and other excursions were so much fun.
I think the key to getting the most out of the paradise that is Yok Ha is to have an open mind and be flexible. We wanted to watch a football game while we were there but the internet was giving us trouble so we listened on the radio instead. Yes the power flickered on and off in the morning and evening for a few moments everyday but it didn’t bother us at all. We were on a secluded island which was a 15 minute boat ride from the mainland so we stopped during one of our excursions for some snacks at a grocery store to tide us over late at night. We adapted to the island “schedule” or lack there of and as a result had one of our best trips to date.
Yes the excursions are a little pricey but we felt it was money well spent. We got our open water certification prior to the trip so we could scuba dive while there and it was an absolutely amazing experience. We dove 3 days in a row. The dive instructor and boat captain we so great! So helpful, so knowledgeable, so fun, and safe. The diving was truly amazing. Underwater it was just me, my husband, and the dive instructor (and thousands of fish). It was perfect for our first time really scuba diving. It was like a private tour of the Belize barrier reef. They were both helpful and accommodating on our dive trips. We really had the best time. I could go on and on. We are so grateful to everyone on the island for making our stay so special. We loved yok ha and can’t wait to return!

My wife and I recently spent 6 days at the Yok Ha Resort and we absolutely loved it! The location is simply stunning; the cabanas are right on the beach and the water was always crystal clear and the perfect temperature! Yok Ha includes access to kayaks and snorkeling/diving equipment and trust me when I say you'll want to take full advantage of all of it to explore the waters around the resort.

The resort also offers many excursions which are definitely worth doing! We went snorkeling on Belize's Barrier Reef (the 2nd Largest in the World) which was a short boat ride from the resort. We also explored Mayan Ruins and went tubing through a cave! Yok Ha took care of all of the logistics for these trips and paired us with wonderful, local guides.

By far the greatest aspect of Yok Ha is the staff! They are a warm group and went out of their way to make us feel welcome on their island. The cabanas were lovely and the staff kept them very clean despite our best efforts to unintentionally track in as much sand as we could. Jaime was an excellent manager on the island and can make a fantastic pina colada! Jaime even climbed a tree to get my wife and I fresh coconuts! I also cannot say enough good things about the food! Yok Ha includes 3 meals a day (plus unlimited coffee/tea and snacks) and the food was divine! I would say the food was the best part of the trip but honestly every aspect of the trip was unbelievable!

I cannot recommend Yok Ha highly enough! I believe they'll make your trip to Belize truly special and unforgettable!

Yok Ha is interesting and does not deserve my typical review style. I am so happy that I had this experience and I would not trade it. I have to say it was in my top 5 travel experiences ever. There are tips that made this happen though and I am happy to share those also. I would recommend this resort only if you are the adventure and go with the flow type of traveler though. This is not the place for the VIP traveler that believes they will be served hand and foot. So, don't be that person..
The resort was having some power issues while we were there because we went during September and during hurricane season. It was still beautiful, and the storms would roll over quickly and everything would calm. We still had plenty of sunshine though. However, I recommend you bring a flashlight, be okay with cool showers, and do not expect to get online/ a computer/ or watch a TV while you are there. For us, it was fine and hot, so the cool showers were really okay.

What I would encourage is for guest to ask for what they want very clearly. We asked for a dance floor and got it, we danced, drank, and had a lovely time more than one night. We played drinking games on the beach with loud speakers out of the door playing music from Belize, we got close to all guest on the beach and there were never more than 10 people on the island.

I asked for Belize dishes and fish/seafood items and it was perfect. Ezra and Shelby have a skill for cooking that is unique and everything was from scratch. I did do the cooking class, but asked to cook longer to get the full value of the price. Ezra allowed me to just stay in the kitchen and we cooked veggies I have never even seen in the US, Mexico, Jamaica, Europe,Turks & Caicos or anywhere I have traveled. To me, that was awesome. I gave feedback that new knives were needed, but come on, How cool it cooking stuff you will never see again? I recommend the cooking class and any time you get to spend with Ezra and Jaime.

On the island you have a feeling of safety. Never once did I feel nervous about the staff or being taken advantage of even when I was completely drinking too much. I was on a girl's trip and it was a blast. We are in our early 30s- so, we actually are always concerned with safety, but not here.

We did kayak out and that was scary and fun, we snorkeled around the island, laid on the beach, in the hammock, and laughed and played with other guest and staff. We saw dolphins from the island, jumping fish while we were kayaking, and so many geckos, birds, starfish in water and conchs are everywhere.

Tips- Ask to go to the store before you go to the island. I needed snacks and juice and cash for the employees on the island. They did allow me to stop and I do not regret having chips in my room and things to make our stay more comfortable.

There are bugs. I swear I never saw any bugs on island, but at night I was being eaten. Bring spray, the one mixed with sunscreen. Sand flies are legit.

The office staff is very friendly, but did not follow up consistently, and I did struggle to understand many of the billing items- like service fees after I already paid the groupon price. I was unsure I was getting picked up and had to send my itinerary 3x. However, this was the worst part of the whole trip and it really wasn't that bad. So, I give that a pass. The island staff- Beyond excellent and made it for it.

Room- Nice overall, towels daily, cleaned daily, but because electricity is special- No hair dryers. There was A/C and that was great. Bring flashlight-just in case! Beach towels are provided.

Food- Ask for what you want. We ate excellent dishes because there was 2 excellent cooks and they listened when we asked for more veggies, seafood, currie chicken, and even beans and rice. All special and all local. We had lobster and seafood bisque which was the best seafood bisque I have ever eaten. I liked the conch ceviche also.

The oranges there are green and sweet- I had no idea. They have a self juicer in the dining room and I was in love with it. Lime is called lem'on there, and lemons like don't exist. The limes were excellent.

Experience- Very cool. There were weather changes, we got completely soaked boating off of island and all we could do was laugh. They gave us rain gear, but it didn't even matter. This was such a neat experience and something like this is rare and unique even though it was not perfect.

Room tip: We had the blue room, Yellow room is most isolated, but shower head was missing in there. I loved our room.
