A couple of months ago my wife and I were looking for a relaxing, secluded vacation for just the two of us. A friend sent us a link to Yok Ha and after reading reviews and looking at some pictures, we booked the trip. We arrived in Belize City and within an hour we had taken a prop plane and landed in Dangriga. It would be a couple of hours before the boat would arrive to take us to the island so we were dropped off at the Pelican Beach Resort. We were offered drinks but we decided to just lay on some lounge chairs right on the water. The breeze was wonderful and it was very relaxing after a day of travel. Eventually a van arrived and took us to the main office where we met Wilfred (the friendly and gracious owner) and headed out after boarding a small boat. You need to know that in the evening many times the winds really pick up. The ride was BUMPY but we loved the adventure! We were headed to an island that we could not see yet and it was almost dark (the staff use GPS to guide them in the dark). When we arrived we were greeted with fresh fruit drinks by Jamie. He took us to our deluxe cabana and helped us get settled in. We hurried because it was dinner time and ran to eat. There were a few other people staying on the island that greeted us and everyone was very friendly. The next morning, all the other guests departed before we woke up and my wife and I realized we had the entire island to ourselves. It was also our first time seeing the island during the day. It was very small and secluded... just what we wanted!!! After a great breakfast we grabbed two kayaks and headed across to another island. We tied the kayaks to a mangrove tree and snorkeled all the way around the island. We snorkeled around several islands over the next few days. We saw lots of fish, starfish, some coral and even a nurse shark. A group arrived on our second night. They were friendly enough with us but seemed quite displeased with the accommodations (and everything else for that matter) but we felt right at home. Jamie was our server for most of the trip and we really enjoyed our time with him. We also went scuba diving with Abi and Fernando at Turneffe Reef. It was truly an awesome experience. These two gentlemen were very patient and helpful. We spent 5 nights on the island and we loved every moment. I would mention, this may not be a spot for everyone. As others have mentioned, the excursion prices are quite expensive. We’ve traveled quite a lot and these were some of the highest prices I’ve ever seen. You also can’t just leave without paying for a boat ride each direction. There are not places to go for a walk or to go shopping. BUT if you are looking for seclusion, relaxation, sunshine, water, hospitality and good food... then Yok Ha is the place for you!
