Absolute luxury in a fantastic setting!

Review of The Lindis
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 May 2023
The Lindis is a fabulous luxury lodge in a fantastic setting. The rooms are quite large and have a balcony area from which the view is superb.

There are several activities on site.

We hired a coupe of e-bikes and went on a 15 km ride. Unfortunately, the chain of my bike broke and we had to call for help. Before setting out, they gave us a backpack with water, insect repellant, sunscreen lotion and most importantly, a satelite phone which we used to call for assistance (there is limited mobile coverage in the remote area). Within 30 minutes, a rescue vehicle was dispatched to pick us up - they knew exactly where we were. Thanks for the service, John!

We also used the hot tub that had a panoramic view of the valley and adjacent mountains, with not a soul within 50 metres! An unforgettable experience that will remain in memory for life.

We also did a walk in the area.

There are numerous activities that I have not mentioned that are available.

Staff were also great, especially Gloria, the manager. Sorry, I can't recall the names of the other staff members.

This place is not cheap, but we considered it to be a once in a lifetime experience (we have stayed in a number of similar luxury properties around the world, each unique).

The only slight disappointment was the food offerings. I felt that they were not up to the standard that one could expect at such an upmarket lodge. I did mention this to Gloria for feedback.

Because of the below-par food experience, I rate this property 9/10.

Overall, if you can afford it, I highly recommend this place - a truly luxury experience in NZ.

We had a very poor experience at Lindis. Place is lovely to be honest but the attitude of the staff is very poor. They served us welcome drinks and later tried to charge for it. Same for the happy hour drinks. After charging so much money they still tried to make a quick extra buck. Very poor attitude. Very disappointing!! Would not go again or recommend to anyone

Dear Guest,

It is a shame that you have put forward a negative review due to being asked to pay for items that were chosen by yourselves from our gift shop as well as an additional multiple course lunch. Your comments here are contradictory to what you left in the guestbook "What an outstanding exp- from the warmth of the staff to the food to the trek to the hot tub everything was par excellence".

It is saddening that you have mentioned that some additional items outside of your rate inclusions were charged throughout your stay, considering you opted not to review your invoice upon checkout, were provided with myriad of complimentary items and lastly have still not paid your outstanding invoice.

Regards
William

What an incredible luxury resort. We had the most amazing time. Every visitor to New Zealand should spend a few days at the Lindis (if you can afford it). The scenery looking out over the Ahuriri Valley and River is jaw-dropping, and the unique architectural design of the hotel blends it seamlessly into the gorgeous hillside backdrop. The staff, service and cuisine was superb - there are not enough superlatives to describe what an extraordinary luxury resort experience The Lindis provides. Highlights for us: the upscale high country gourmet barbecue picnic next to a stream looking out over the Southern Alps with our own dedicated chef, e-biking through the Ahuriri Valley, savoring NZ Sauvignon Blanc while soaking in the secluded hot tub and enjoying the spectacular evening scenery, and finally, incredibly productive fishing in the Ahuriri River with The Lindis's top-notch fishing guide, Roger Webb, who made it possible for me to catch what will probably be the largest brown trout (7 lbs, 28") I will ever catch in my entire life. A special thanks to Andy Cousins and his colleagues who provided us with memories that will last a life-time.

Room tip: Book your activities well in advance, especially the popular ones.

Dear Henry,

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your experience at The Lindis- we are thrilled you enjoyed the Lodge, the environment and the service provided by our talented team.

We are so happy you had a fantastic fishing experience with Rodger, catching at 7lbs+ Brown is certainly quite the achievement! The Ahuriri is a challenging, but also rewarding stretch of water to fish- and we are so lucky to be able to guide clients on this body of water.

We hope to welcome you back again

Thank you
The Team at The Lindis

Not a fishing lodge, though on a beautiful stretch of river. Despite the efforts of an experienced guide we caught zero fish in the river at the lodge after a Hard day of fishing. The couple fishing the day before experienced the same thing. At this time of year (March) the river apparently tends to run high from beginning precipitation in the mountains. Check carefully on conditions or be disappointed as we were.

The lodge is an architectural masterpiece. However, I doubt the architect ever stayed there. The lighting in the room was a challenge, especially in the middle of the night when a motion sensing switch (the only kind in the hall) guaranteed a bright light shock, and navigating the bar room swinging doors to the toilet could not be done gracefully.

The view is spectacular, and the staff works hard to meet your needs.

Room tip: If you want to fish, call about conditions. Note that the gym is a separate pod requiring a key. You are in the middle of nowhere.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to review you experience at The Lindis.

Im glad that you enjoyed the staff and the view whilst staying at The Lindis - however it is a shame that the fishing experience did not meet your expectations. On the day of your guided fishing experience, it was pointed out that on that particular day, the conditions were challenging and you had the option to not go, without cancellation but chose to go ahead as planned.

With fishing, it can be challenging, but also very rewarding - we have had many clients, also as reviewed here on Tripadvisor, that have experienced outstanding days, catching hero sized trout, and even some days in high numbers.

The Ahuriri river is a river that offers the opportunity to catch a once in a lifetime fish, but unfortunately that is not the case in your day out fishing.

We are glad you enjoyed other aspects of your stay and welcome you back in the future to experience The Lindis and the Ahuriri Valley.

Thanks
The Team at The Lindis

What a resort in NZ!
What a view!

Stylish- modern design.

Alone with a grand view of the Ahuriri River and valley.

One of the 10 best fly fishing places in the world. Our first try was much fun. Book in advance.

We stayed in a small mirror Hobbit-box type home- all alone- grand view- with bath tube outside, luxury inside.

Very good food as well in the unique main building.

Hiking at the river was excellent.

Not cheap - but worth it for 2-3 nights.
