Blair was our guide today. This is our 4th Secret Food tour. We were originally booked for yesterday but it was cancelled due to illness and rescheduled for today.
Blair was knowledgeable and friendly. The food some of the food was fantastic and some was ok, in my opinion. We really enjoyed the deep dish pizza and the perogies. Wasn’t a huge fan of the Italian beef dip but enjoyed the atmosphere.
Of all the tours, this had the least amount of walking and covered really a small area of the Loop.
Blair was a great host and even walked around the Cultural Center with us after the tour ended.
Overall, we enjoyed our day!!!

We enjoyed this tour with Blair. It had plenty of food but the food didn't seem like the main focus of the tour, it was mostly about the history of the city. For us, some of it perhaps assumed a bit too much knowledge of general US history but maybe that's just because the rest of the people on the tour were American.

All of the food was really good and we felt the places and dishes had been chosen well.

The tour felt very rushed - there were a few occasions where we waited outside while people were still in the loo. I've never really experienced that on a tour before but I guess it was effective for getting people to hurry, if not a bit stressful. I think we still missed a small part - I'm not sure how we could have gone any faster as not many questions were asked. I would suggest that it probably isn't a good tour to go on if your mobility is limited at all as the pace of walking was fast and there were some stairs. The total amount of walking is not very much though - maybe around 20 mins total split into shorter parts.

I'm not sure how long ago the other reviews are from but just in case it helps anyone, the tour didn't include entrance to the art institute for us as some of the other reviews mentioned. This wasn't a problem though, we still enjoyed the tour overall.

This tour was too long, and the last 90 minutes added no value. We began at Gino’s, one of the original deep dish pizza makers, where we sampled the original recipe: oatmeal crust (like a shortcrust as opposed to a dough crust), with the tomato and mozzarella mixture slopping about. Tasty enough but lacking the sophistication modern pizza has. Then it was Max’s for the Chicago hotdog; the nine additions to the basic Vienna beef sausage (like a frankfurter really) overwhelming the sausage itself (probably a good thing), And in the Italian Village (a famous place in its own right) we had the Italian meat sandwich, which is thinly sliced beef in some jus and placed in a bread roll with some bell peppers. Again tasty, but not particularly exciting. At the Palmer House (another Chicago icon) sitting in the lounge of the hotel, we had the best brownie I have ever had with a scoop of ice cream on top. A visit to a Garret’s popcorn outlet (cheesy corn anyone?) was the last food stop. The tour could have ended here. It didn’t. That was a mistake. Instead we walked onto Millennium Park, looked at the Pritzker Music Pavilion, played in the “Bean” and went across to the Chicago Cultural Centre. As all these bits were free and easily discoverable, so going there with a guide added no value to an otherwise good tour, well guided by Ben. Four and a half hours after we started the tour was finally over. I was relieved, which is not what one should feel.

My husband and I are born and raised in Chicago, and we still loved this tour as much as an out-of-towner. The food was delicious, and Blair is an awesome guide. His randomly interesting facts and engaging personality are really what make this tour phenomenal. We loved the blend of Chicago history, interesting sights, paired with the classic Chicago food. All the walking helps, too! Highly recommend - you will not be disappointed!
