There are few places open for lunch in early October in the Fromelles area and we were grateful to be directed here by the helpful staff in the Fromelles Museum. The restaurant is pleasingly French, and was full of locals or business people passing through. We gratefully received the set menu (starter and main or main and dessert) for 13.5 euros and while it wasn't memorable (I can't recall what we ate) it did the job.

Enjoyed a wonderful local Beef casserole-style local dish here that was very hearty. Nice building inside. Could not fault the food and service was good.

Could there be a nicer lunch to have after a wet, weary tramp around the battlefields of Fromelles ? Or a session of paintballing ? The staff at the estaminet (a traditional Flanders tavern) were charming and the radiator behind my chair very welcome but the meal was what really made it. A warming glass of “vin rouge”, a plate of chunky cold meats, a warm cheesy tart and copious well-made chips did the business.

Arriving early for Sunday lunch as we made our way back to Calais, we were able to watch the restaurant filling up until it was almost overflowing. It’s clearly very popular with the locals, which is a good sign. And well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
