Bad experience

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Apr 2024via mobile
It is unfortunate because many years ago I stayed in this wonderful old hotel. Never again! It has been run into the ground. Rooms were absolutely filthy and unkept. The valet and front desk were lethargic and unwilling to be of assistance.
After our check-in, we found two prescription drug pills on the floor. We asked the maids to come in and vacuum. They said they did not have a vacuum, but handed us a broom and a dustpan. We told the front desk they were not willing to vacuum because they didn’t have a vacuum and he said he thought they did have one , but he never got up or did anything. The bottom of my feet were black with dirt after walking on the floor barefoot. Very sad because of the history of this hotel and the fabulous location.

For some time, we've wanted to stay here and finally found an opportunity. We stayed in room 200 and the balcony was quite cool. A Ficus tree with its own squirrel were quickly our friends as they obviously just put up with us. Make sure you close the door to your room! :)The bed was comfortable, and service was excellent. It would be grand if some money were put into it to help it along. Of course it is an historical building, so perhaps that's something to consider, but I imagine some improvements could be made to the bathroom. We understand small, but wood in the shower window? All in all, a fun place, great location and I really did ride the elevator!

Room tip: You may want ear plugs on some nights.

Here’s the pros: the location is incredibly good. The staff is very nice and helpful. The room air conditioning is great. There is good coffee for free all morning in the lobby. Here’s the cons: this vintage hotel is old. The room was very noisy…in fact…ear plugs are provided for free. Room lighting is very poor and some doors don’t close properly. The carpet in the rooms and the hallways are dirty; during our week stay, we never once saw a vacuum being used. The rooms lack refrigerators and counter space…we had to keep many items on the floor. It pains me to say these things but I cannot go back; we definitely expect a lot more for $300 per night. This is better than a campsite but cannot match a modern motel. If the hotel invested in minor renovations and better housekeeping, it would make a huge difference.

Room tip: See my review that says it all.

Our overnight stay started out nicely. The daytime staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is lovely. The free earplugs over on the wine “mini bar” should have clued me in.

Later on in the evening , the loud music from the Bovine restaurant underneath our room started and never stopped. Between that, loud guests in the hallway and street noise, I ended up cramming those earplugs into my ears and drifted off to sleep. Woke up before 1am and the music from downstairs was STILL blaring. I tried to call down to the front desk but no one was answering. We decided then to pack up and go home. Never again!

Pros:
- friendly daytime staff
- Beautiful historic property

Cons:
- extremely noisy
- Unprofessional night staff not answering phone

Room tip: Extremely NOISY!!!!

This hotel definitely shows its age, but it must be viewed as part of its charm. Prior to this visit, the last time I stayed here was 35 years ago. The location can’t be beat. Staff was friendly. Standard 12 PM checkout time was appreciated. I’d stay here again.

I wanted to stay within walking distance to all the beautiful shops and restaurants in downtown Winter Park and this location was perfect. Yes, the hotel is old but it has so much "character" between the vintage elevator, gift shop and treasures in the lobby. It's also wonderful to sit on the balcony, have a glass of wine or cup of tea while overlooking the Central Park or street.

The staff was very helpful with anything I needed. Be sure to ask if you have issues with getting on to the WiFi. Once I was shown how to do it, it was fine. There is a charge for the Valet Parking but it's worth the convenience in a place like this where parking is difficult and the drivers can be a little crazy.

I read some reviews that complained about the train or street noise. To me, that is part of the charm of staying in a place like this. It reminded me of the smaller hotels I stayed at when I've traveled in Europe or Canada. I prefer hotels like this to chain type places.

Having said that, a few minor touch-up repairs (i.e. like getting rid of the chipped paint in the bathroom) and a Continental Breakfast (with pre-wrapped items like croissants and muffins) could improve the value. My room and balcony were clean for the most part, but some aspects were a bit "run down." That would NOT deter me from staying again in the future.

Room tip: Rooms that face the park get the train noise. Rooms that face the street get street noise but the street quiets down around 10pm.
