Terrible Stay at 4th Rate Hotel an Outrageous Price

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 May 2023
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Park Plaza Hotel on Monday, May 1, 2023, checking out on Tuesday, May 2, 2023. We stayed in one of your Honeymoon Suites for which you charged us $347.63.

We were extremely disappointed with our stay and believe that the hotel should refund part of what we consider an exorbitant rate for the following reasons:

Soon after we occupied the room we noticed that the toilet was broken and would not flush. When I complained, I was told by the front desk that no one was available to fix the toilet. We were offered another room, but as we were already unpacked we chose to only use the bathroom there, which was very inconvenient.

The room we occupied with filthy and had apparently not been cleaned or dusted for some time. The furnishings were shabby with stuffing hanging out of the underside of chairs.

The "coffee" available in the lobby was what one would expect in the cheapest motel, not in a hotel charging nearly $350 per night for a substandard room.

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel.

Hotel badly in need of investment, refurbishment.
Poor sound proofing. Our room had previously been inter leading - rowdy latecomers disturbed sleep.
Cutesy charm but minimal facilities, badly managed. Beautiful town.
But this hotel - NO.

Room tip: Stay somewhere else

I recently stayed here with some friends and I have to say that our experience was delightful from making our reservations over the phone to the customer service from many of the employees at the hotel.
Unfortunately, when I received my bill I was charged an extra $75 of which I was told that I did not return my key. I know for a fact that I did but was told that I did not when I called to inquire about this. I called back the next day and again I told them that I remember turning the key in. I was put on hold and miraculously the key was found. So, I was told that I would be reimbursed the $75. First of all, I have to wonder if I would have been called after the key was found. Second, I think that customers should be told when they check in to return the key or they will be charged $75. We were never told this when we checked in or checked out. I have stayed in many hotels because of my profession and I always turn my key in.
Very disappointed with the outcome of this stay!

The hotel has some historic charm but overall in need of many updates. The plumbing is unacceptable. Was never able to regulate the shower water temp. Scalding or freezing. The fixtures are very old. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were very good. Overall the street traffic and train noise is a bit more than expected. Won’t plan to stay at this property again.

Booked for the Parkside location and got what we wanted - with very good service, but little else. Rooms are small with even smaller bathrooms - toilet is so close to the bathtub, a tall person with longer legs has to choose between sitting on a 45 degree angle or sitting with their feet in the tub!

Our top-floor room had an air conditioner that was attached to the ceiling - which was fine, except that the temperature numbers lit up like a strong nightlight - which might give some difficulty in falling asleep.

As somewhat expected, there was some noise from the several trains passing along the nearby tracks - but they do offer free earplugs which we did not need to use.

Although they advertise a continental breakfast, it has been curtailed - now just coffee and tea service.

On the plus side, the valet parking was quick and only $15 per day.

The worst hotel experience I've had. I knew to expect the constant sound of commuter train whistles and track sounds and that wasn't a big deal. The hotel is over 100 years old. It looks like it and it hasn't been modernized. The lighting is poor, the walls have cracks and ears since they are thin. Sounds are heard from the outside and inside. Plus they charge for small bottles of water.

Room tip: Pass it by.
