Poor Response from Management

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Jun 2023
I am beyond disappointed with the way the front desk, management and the supervisor have been handling my situation. Hours have now been lost on my communicating over a phone charger I left behind.

I stayed at this hotel on June 6-8 so we could attend an FSU orientation for my daughter. We loved the amenities and everything went well, overall. Checkout for us was fast because we needed to be at FSU by 8:30am on W for another day of orientation. I was running behind, and sent my daughter and her father on their way. As I rushed out, I told myself to grab my charger I had left bedside, in the outlet under the lamp, but through the haste I forgot it. I realized it immediately, but didn’t turn around. I was already late.

I called and spoke with a young lady at the desk. She told me she would let housekeeping know. I assumed they’d call, or something. But, they never did.

After orientation, on Wednesday, June 8th( around 3pm, I went to the inn and the young lady at the desk looked around and said there was nothing found. She tells me she will be sending me a lost item report. I fill it out immediately.

I get a call that same evening, of June 6th, at 6:30, from Armani, as I am driving back to Orlando, that they found my charger. They will mail it out on Thursday morning.

I never received further communication, and noted today, Sun, June 11th that my lost item case hasn’t been resolved. Therefore, I call and Armani answers. She calls her supervisor, he explained to her that he didn’t send it because he is waiting for me to fill out the lost item form. The one I already filled out. I explain this to her, and she calls him again. I am waiting now for this communication over half an hour on the phone to take place and trying my best to be patient with this whole scenario that is rightfully disappointing. She comes back on after talking to the supervisor that she was able to pull up the case, because I gave her the case number and found it for her supervisor and they will mail it out.

This whole entire time, I want to say thank you at the same time because Armani was being respectful and doing everything she could do on her part.

After hanging up with Armani, on June 12th, I received an email, that tells me my item has been found and it now informs me that I am to pay $25 to receive my item back. Frustration kicks in. This is now about principle. I call back, and I don’t hear the name because when they answer they speak so fast over the phone so I’m not sure if it’s Armani. Either way, once I begin speaking up, she explains she is one of the managers. She says her name, and because of what happens afterwards, I dropped it completely. Taylani, or Tayana, or… I wanted to know her name, and she became upset because I tried to understand her name, and pronounce it, or maybe she became upset because I have become an inconvenience… or I am not sure, but either way, the manager is escalating her voice level and tone and explains to me,

My lost item was not a priority.

My lost item that I wanted to retrieve immediately. So it wasn’t lost. It was left behind, but because another guest was already in my room they couldn’t check. The item was left behind and I knew where.

This manager explains, they are short staffed and cleaning for their current guests is and was a priority. Not my lost item. That the managers are cleaning the rooms. Despite saying she understood my frustration she turned it around and made this about her and the managers and the hours they are putting in. Justifying my need to pay $25 for my item to be shipped. The conversation escalated quickly and became very disrespectful on her part making me irrelevant as a guest. I paid as a guest, and I am and was and will be just as important as every other guest of Marriott. Past. Present. Future.

As mentioned, my daughter will be attending FSU and there will be many times I will be staying in Tally. This hotel is in prime location to FSU. I would have liked to have felt respected, appreciated and valued as a guest. $25 is no longer the point. Principle!

As a Lifetime Platinum Elite, my wife and I made a two (2) night reservation using Bonvoy points to attend our youngest daughter's Florida History Day Competition at Tallahassee Community College, which came on the heels of FSU's Graduation Weekend (i.e. we were checking in when everyone else was checking out).

Well in advance of our arrival, after speaking with the very helpful and friendly Eric, we reached out directly to longtime General Manager, Keith Hoogerheyde, and advised him of our upcoming stay as well as our multiple special requests. Which should come as absolutely no surprise to Trip Advisor readers, Mr. Hoogerheyde promptly replied and was incredibly accommodating and immediately granted all of our special requests to make our stay so special. Needless to say, we were delighted with such a response and we really looked forward to our upcoming two (2) night stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott Tallahassee Universities at the Capitol.

The Residence Inn by Marriott Tallahassee Universities at the Capitol could not be better located, well within walking distance of FSU, Florida A&M as well as the Capitol complex. How convenient!

We arrived ultra-early (8:25 am) on the Sunday following the FSU graduation and the hotel was really hopping and bursting at the seams. Notwithstanding this massive influx of people, both the staff and management rolled up their shirt sleeves and really rose to the occasion to deliver excellent customer service. By way of example, not only were we able to check into our suite well by 8:30 am, but the hotel receptionist INSISTED that we enjoy a complimentary breakfast even though we had just arrived at the hotel and had not slept there the night before. Such generosity and hospitality was clearly on display that busy Sunday morning.

The suite itself was large, exceedingly clean and contained everything necessary for either a short-term or long-term stay. Further, the Wi-Fi was speedy as well throughout both rooms for our multiple devices. The housekeeping staff provided extra towels, bath products and serviced the room daily, which you just don't see too often these days. In addition, we would like to compliment the housekeeping staff for keeping all of the common areas sparking clean, which is paramount at this time.

Every team member with whom we came in contact, including the management as listed above, the front desk staff, house-keeping staff and breakfast attendants, went out of their way to make us feel welcomed.

Speaking of breakfast, it was a cornucopia of wonderful food, including make-yourself waffles (with a variety of syrups), fresh fruit (strawberries, grapes, oranges, bananas), eggs, bacon or sausage, oatmeal and a full selection of breads, bagels, cereal and yogurt. Further, the coffee was excellent and there was a nice selection of juices, milk and ice cold water if coffee isn't your jam. See our numerous pictures.

Also, on select evenings, there is a complimentary Manager's Reception with excellent bottled beers (Fat Tire and Blue Moon), beer on tap (Mango Wit Belgium Witbier), wine (Two Vines Cab and a chardonnay) and non-alcoholic beverages as well as light snacks (we had flatbread pizza, which was replenished several times throughout the duration of the Manager's Reception). See our numerous picture.

The extraordinary customer service that we received before and during our stay made this property a ten out of ten in our book. Congratulations to Keith, Eric, the rest of front office staff, the house-keeping staff and the restaurant staff for focusing on customer service and satisfaction.

You will be well served by selecting this very convenient hotel for your base of operations in Tallahassee. Rest assured, you will not be disappointed!

Room tip: Get to breakfast early for the best selection!

I stayed here with my family to attend graduations from FSU. First off, they completely price gouged for this weekend, charging $749.00 per night for a room that they normally charge $122.00 per night. Second, they have 2 elevators for their 5 story building. However, during this $749/night weekend only 1 elevator was operational. This one working elevator has to be the slowest elevator in the United States. Every elevator ride had a minimum 10 minute wait for it to arrive, just to then take the slowest ride to your floor. Lastly, on my first night they decided to empty the outside trash dumpsters at 1:00 am in the morning.
On the positive side it was located across the street from the Civic Center where the graduations took place, which almost made the $30/per day parking fee bearable.

Perhaps on a non-"special event priced" weekend this would be an acceptable place to stay. But for this weekend or any other "special event priced" weekend look elsewhere.

Room tip: Make sure the elevators are working.

Upon checking in and walking to my room I found my bedroom window on the floor and the room was completely open to the outside. I was on the 3rd floor or would have been concerned that an intruder was in the room.

I was able to put the window back in place but asked for, and was granted, a different room.

While the location and lobby make this seem like a cost affordable option I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you can stay elsewhere like DoubleTree, aloft or hotel Duval.

We are in town for the game.....this is our first time staying at this location. It will also be the last. The bar across the street is ROCKING. The music is so loud... it's like being at a concert.
We called downstairs to the front desk....the phone was picked up and immediately hung up!!
It's a shame....you pay grossly inflated rates for this???? Nope, not again.

Dear 805renaeg,

Thank you for choosing us and taking the time to post your review. Our associates strive to exceed Marriott standards; providing the highest level of hospitality is our number one priority. Therefore, we apologize for falling short of your expectations during your stay in Tallahassee. We hope you will accept our apology on behalf of our city’s leadership.

As previously mentioned, we are actively working with local business partners, city leadership, and local law enforcement for a solution to the disruptive level of noise you experienced. Specifically, the city of Tallahassee’s leadership is copied for their continued awareness of the severity of the issues caused for our guests by the high level of unabated noise in the Gaines St. area. We hope they will soon find a permanent resolution to the situation. We remain confident in their concern for the visitors to the FSU campus and our capital city. Ensuring a positive experience during their stay in our beautiful, vibrant, and active neighborhood is our shared priority.

No sleep til 2am, thanks to street noise. They badly need new high quality windows. We did not hear noise from neighboring rooms or above, which is unusual and appreciated. Room was decent, bed comfortable (maybe not if you like a firm mattress though), pull-out sofa bed not comfortable with squeaky springs, shower hot/good pressure, mostly clean (a few stray hairs and some mildew), breakfast average/coffee terrible (weak), in-room coffee must have been very old (also not good), we asked for extra coffee for the room and never got it, staff minimally cordial. TV remote not user friendly, may have needed new batteries but we were not there long enough to really care. Good location for FSU events, but not if you want to be well rested. Next time we will sacrifice convenience and stay farther out from town.
