This was a last minute trip since another excursion we had planned was cancelled. I found the turtle hospital and rescue to be both educational and fun to sea the turtles so closely. These people are very passionate about saving and rescuing hurt sea turtles. Many are eventually released, but some must must stay at the rescue for life. We fed them lettuce in the giant tanks and found out why most of them were brought here in the first place. I think our guide was new and seemed a little nervous, however the tour did make you think about the fragility of ocean life. A must see in Marathon. You must have a reservation since this is a popular attraction.

We took the tour and it was terrific. Got lots of information about the different turtles and were able to see them very close. The hospital is a non-profit and depends on visitors and supporters. I highly recommend making a visit.

I cannot recommend this place enough ! All ages will enjoy. This was a highlight of my trip here on the keys. It is very educational and informative. Very clean. They’re doing a great job with these amazing creatures. To see how we are endangering them is sad but education is key here. The ICU was amazing to witness surgery going on

they were not social distancing AT ALL. They did not limit the number of people on the tour and packed them into a small room. There was no way to not be right next to a stranger. Such a disappoint after the research I had done that stated they had extra Covid measures in place. All for the all mighty dollar.

Bette Z, Manager at The Turtle Hospital, responded to this reviewResponded 25 February 2021

Thank you for visiting the Turtle Hospital and for taking the time to give us feedback on our educational programs.

Our program sizes are reduced from what they were pre-COVID 19 and we continue to adapt our programs to find the delicate balance of supporting the sea turtle care, educating the public and of course keeping people and animals safe in the process.

We have an outside Tiki being constructed this Spring that will allow for an outdoor educational experience with more room for guests to spread out.

Sincerely,
Bette Zirkelbach

We visited the turtle hospital with our three children who are animal lovers. The tour was educational and appropriate even for young children. You see tons of turtles on the tour and learn about their rehab and possible release. At the end of the tour, you can feed the turtles, but it's illegal to actually touch the turtles because they are endangered species. Instead, you throw them little food pellets from about 10 feet into their tank.

I appreciate the work the turtle hospital does to rehab and release these endangered animals. However, there are a number of turtles who won't ever be released because of damage to their shells inflicted by boats. They are kept in the hospital and used for turtle blood transfusions. I would feel better about the operation if they bred these turtles so their babies could at least go back in the wild. The facility doesn't breed the turtles because they don't have a sand area. Seems like a waste and a sad existence for these turtles.
