Owner description: The Hobbiton Movie Set tour is an essential stop on the itinerary for all visitors travelling through New Zealand, offering an interesting and entertaining experience incorporating the famous film set as seen in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep and beef farm, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did, as you journey through the village, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance. Your guide will then escort you around the set, showing you the intricate detailing, pointing out the most famous locations and explaining how the movie magic was made. You will be taken around the 12 acre set; past Hobbit holes, the Mill and into the famous Green Dragon™ Inn, where you can indulge in our exclusive, specially brewed beverages to conclude your own Middle-earth™ adventure.

Beautiful grounds. Well maintained, quality set from the movie which captured all of its magic. Surprisingly large. High quality guided tour by people who obviously like the movies. Drink at the end at 'The Green Dragon Inn' was good. Meal in the marquee was ordinary (lunch buffet). Gift shop also could have been better stocked. Was very busy, but did not hamper fun and good photos. Great family day.

I have to confess, I had not read anything about Hobbiton prior to my visit and had just assumed that it would be a mockup of a Hobbit house and a gift shop. How wrong was I? It is an absolutely wonderful and complete village and it looks like the Hobbits have just stepped away and will be back soon. The attention to detail is faultless and the cottage gardens, complete with vegetable beds are exquisite. There are bees and butterflies everywhere who also seem to be enjoying the gardens. Apparently some of the vegetables are actually fake, but I found it hard to pick which was real and which was not, and just loved the whole set up. At the end of the tour there is a complementary drink at the Green Dragon. I had the non-alcoholic ginger ale option which was delicious. There are also dress up clothes available at the end if you want to dress up and get some pictures of yourself in full Hobbit mode. The tour itself itself takes about 2 hours and at any one time there are groups ahead and behind you so your movements between sites are carefully orchestrated. You do get plenty of opportunity to look at each Hobbit house though.

There is a reasonable amount of walking on a dirt path and so this would not be the easiest place for someone with restricted mobility. In our group we had a gentleman with a walking stick as well as myself who has some health restrictions. Both of us managed okay, though needed a bit more time. However, there were some parts of the route that were steep so someone with serious mobility issues should investigate whether the path is suitable for their individual condition.

The countryside around Hobbiton is beautiful and it is easy to see why the movie producers chose this spot. Well worth the visit.

Thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon. Brilliant scottish tour guide mike was fantastic and struck the right balance between informative and friendly. The set was fantastic.so well kept and such attention to detail. Worth the money. They run about 80 tours a day on a slow day
...so be warned...its busy. About 40 per tour group so you aren't going to have the place to yourself but its well managed and doesnt get too jammed. Really enjoyed. Well worth it.
