I have seen the Lord of the Rings films, but not the Hobbits films. I have read the Hobbit book (but long ago!).
The tour was interesting and I would recommend this for people interested in film making or especially Hobbits fans. The tour guide could tell a lot of background stories about the film making as also set up of the scenery. I now want to see the Hobbit films.
Now some critical points: The tour is totally structured and you cannot lose the feeling that somebody is laughing in the background about the stupid tourists, which pay a ton of money for a 2 hours guided tour with one free drink. You feel like a sheep as you are forced to walk a specific path with groups before and behind of you. It is like playing golf on a nice sunny day and the Marshall reminds you every 5 Minutes to speed up!!!
So if you struggle with your decision to spend for 4 people around 200 NZD for a 2 hour tour, don’t do it!
Hobbiton Movie Set is probably one of the key attraction in North New Zealand. One can only enter through the tour (pls be punctual as the tour leaves on time), no free-and-easy. Once we enter the set, we feel almost like part of the set as we visit each hobbit home. There are 44 of them and while we can’t enter any, the exterior is very pretty and Instagram-worthy. Only one hobbit house is open and because of the many tour groups, one only has time to take photo at the door. The tour can be a little rushed as we need to stay with the group, so photo-taking has to be fast. There’s also a little cafe towards the exit and drinks are complimentary.
I’m not a hobbit fan but my friends who are truly enjoyed the experience. For me, I enjoyed the scenery, flowers, lake and pretty homes.
