After eating remarkably well in Basilicata, we were disappointed with the quality of the food when we visited southern Campania in early October. The exceptions were Tenuto Vannulo in Capaccio Scalo (their stunning, stunning bufala made for divine picnics) and la Chioccia d’Oro. This friendly, unpretentious trattoria serves tasty food at very fair prices. And it is busy, busy! Portions are large, the cooking is well above average and service is friendly, efficient (it has to be with the numbers of customers!). The only negative note is the house wine, which is not stunning but drinkable and unlikely to break the bank. For a three-course meal with wine, water and coffee for two, we paid between 40 – 45 euros. Instinct would suggest a 3 ½ star rating, but four is fairer – wonderful to see a trattoria SO busy on week day lunchtimes (that added to the whole experience). Visit!
