“not swank and can be crowded”

Grand Central Market

A wide variety of food, ranging from pedestrian to quite good. Almost no produce or other market stalls, almost all restaurant/dessert/bar scene. Can be crowded so better to go at off hours if possible. If you like comparisons, not nearly so large and produce oriented as Reading Terminal in Philly, or as swank as the Grand Central market in NYC or as excellent as Time Out in Lisbon but worth a trip if you are in DTLA.

we went on a saturday, and the place was packed. This was my first time there, and i guess expected more. Their produce section was about 10% of the total building, so if you're looking for more of a farmers market, then you're in the wrong place. There was plenty of different places to eat, but the only seating that was available was downstairs by the bathroom. The restrooms were not clean, and when you see someone coming out of the restrooms drinking out of a bottle of liquor, and the security officer approaches them only to say hi, then it was time for us to go.W e won't be going back!!

Grand Central Market is a cornucopia of food outlets, some fresh produce vendors and few other outlets--the predominate vendors are for the serious Epicurean. Your can graze among the outlets or have a full meal. there is Chinese, Thai, Mexican, deli, roast meats, desserts, cheese, bread, juice, and on an on. There is seating throughout and on the sidewalk areas outside. weekends are crowded. The restrooms are downstairs. Oddly enough there is a small dollar store type outlet that is a great inexpensive souvenir place which most visits miss as they never leave the main floor. One my favorites is the Villa Moreliana on the Broadway entry side which has the best Carnitas Tacos in LA!

There is so much going on here. If you love to try new foods, this is the place to be. A great representation of ethnic foods and drinks available. It is recommended that you make a lap around before settling on one place. (If you can) bring an empty stomach and let the feast begin!

My husband and I have been a frequent visitor to the Grand Central Market in LA and have not come close to trying the variety of food places. So many great choices representing a multitude of cultures. My NY roots have me particularly partial to Wexler’s and I never miss the opportunity to have the LA Bird sandwich with a Dr. Brown Cream Soda. The market is a great place to go when you either can’t decide what you feel like eating or are with people who want something different from you. One thing that is easy for everyone to agree on is McConnel’s ice cream, the line never intimidates me because I know that when it’s my turn I can sample whatever I want until I make my final decision. Wether you’re looking for a culinary treat, a great craft beer or a gathering place for fun people watching, don’t miss Grand Central Market.
