Best food top in downtown LA

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Jul 2024via mobile
Professional front desk. Check in and out easy. Multi bed dorms are equipped with an in room shower and toilet (separate door). Make sure to check out the roof top bar and pool. Really makes this place unique. They also have a bar and restaurant of good quality.

Room 8/10: Nice and spacious room. The facilities are old however it seems as it is the vibe.

Location 1/10: Downtown LA did not feel safe at all.. So nothing with the hotel, however I would not stay in downtown LA again. Especially not so close to Skid Row when the the area still has mayor issues

Staff: Nice and friendly.

Facilities: Pool is good and there is sun the entire day as it is a roof top pool.

Good to know: The pool opens at 12, so if you want to stay at the pool entire day, that is not possible. The gym is good yet quite small. Dunkin' doughnut is right across the road, so it is easy to buy breakfast there if not included.

Hello and thanks for the feedback! Glad to see that, overall, you liked the hotel. Our apologies regarding the location. Though we really do have the best location in DTLA it is still DTLA and we understand this is not for everyone.

Again, thank you very much.

Booked a bed in a single quad for one night; was assigned the top bunk, but there is absolutely no feasible way to climb into the bed. The ONLY ladder, for some demented reason, is permanently affixed smack between the two sets of bunks, at such an angle that the higher you climb up, the closer your body gets to the ladder itself, making it impossible to swing one's body up and into their bed. On top of that, the ladder happens to sit DIRECTLY PARALLEL to the overhead lamp in the room⸺you cannot get high enough on the ladder to even ATTEMPT to climb into bed without smacking your head and/or upper body on the light. If you're lucky enough to manage to get in your bed⸺or score a bottom bunk⸺your reward is a single pillow with zero support, and a blanket so thin you would think it were woven a decade ago. Yes, the beds are available at a cheap nightly rate, but you are not even close to getting what you paid for.

Do yourself a favor and don't book here unless you're booking one of the private rooms, as they are the only ones that offer any sort of comfort.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry you had an issue climbing into the top bunk. The structure is set for maximum stability and safety. We are always happy to reassign our guests to other bunks/rooms upon request. Just need to ask us. No trouble. Bunks come with a bottom sheet, top sheet and blanket. We are always happy to provide more linen or blankets upon request.

The Rooms are still pretty nice and the lobby/cafe are good.

If I lived downtown I would definitely go to this cafe on the regular.

Biggest Issue for me was how loud it was. It is located on a super busy street and my room was a King Room on the 12th floor and I heard cars revving and drunks fighting on the street at all hours of the night.

Broken Shaker on the Roof is nice but it's way too cold to really use the pool so the $35 or whatever it is "Amenity Fee" is a bit of a rip-off.

For this price point and to stay in DTLA, The Biltmore is a much nicer experience.

Maybe since the Hostel rooms are so cheap people don't really care about the noise but for charging $200 + /night w Fees + Taxes there are better options in DTLA.

Room tip: Definitely get coffee there and check out Broken Shaker on roof for Happy Hour 4-6pm during the week.

Thank you for your candid feedback, Kyle. We are happy to see that you enjoyed the hotel but do apologize regarding the exterior noise you experienced. Perhaps, on your next stay, we can get you on a higher floor away from the street. We have very nice Studio and Private King rooms which would suit you.

I stayed at Freehand for 4 nights in Feb 2024. I was in LA for a work meeting and for some reason, this is the hotel my company recommended. I wish I had done more research ahead of time and chosen a different place to stay.

Cons
- Half of this hotel is actually a hostel with dorm rooms, and it definitely has hostel vibes. Large groups of young, loud guests hanging out in the hallways and staying up late into the night was unpleasant. One night was so loud I had to call the front desk because of the noise. They sent security up and it did quiet down after that, but having a poor night of sleep for a work event was horrible. My coworker who stayed at the same hotel, different floor, had the same issue the following night.
- The room itself felt like a prison room. Everything is old, and not in a cool vintage way as it may seem in their pictures. The lighting is very dim and there was no natural light because of how close the hotel is to the next building. The lights are motion activated, so they were constantly turning off - even while in the middle of showering. The set up of the room was very confusing and small and there were not enough outlets.
- The location was also horrible, it felt like I was staying on skid row. People were getting into fights at the front door while we were trying to enter and it did not feel safe. It's directly across the street from sketchy bars
- When I flew in, it was pouring rain, so hoped to get dinner at the hotel restaurant with my coworker but their restaurant is closed on certain days (i think sundays and mondays?). They also ran out of umbrellas.

Thanks for the feedback. We are very sorry you did not have a great stay with us recently. Only a small part of the hotel has the dorm room concept. Vast majority are private king rooms and we run our facility as a full-service hotel. Our apologies regarding the noise you experienced and happy we were able to get it quieted down. Regarding our location, we are actually at the epicenter of all that is in DTLA. We are directly across and nearby many stores, restaurants, cafes, shopping, etc...walking distance to the convention center, Crypto.com Arena, Pershing Square and more. DTLA is DTLA and it is an urban area with many of the same issues all of LA and most other major cities are dealing with now. Regarding our design, we understand it is not for everyone's taste.

Our apologies once again that you did not enjoy the hotel or location.
